Surgical treatment typically has a great prognosis with 90% of patients regaining 90% of function in their limb. Regardless of surgical or non-surgical treatment, there will always be osteoarthritis in that knee that will prevent a 100% recovery.

Diabetes mellitus is caused by an irregularity in the production of a hormone called insulin. Insulin is one of the hormones produced by the pancreas, and it regulates the body’s ability to use glucose. Glucose comes from the food that your pet eats, and is in turn the food for your pet’s cells. Without the proper amount of insulin, the cells cannot take the glucose from the bloodstream and pull it into the cells to use it for energy. This results in an extreme amount of glucose in the bloodstream, which is eventually excreted in the urine. This large amount of glucose in the blood can also cause cataracts in the eyes of dogs. Because the body’s cells cannot use glucose for energy, they break down protein, starch and fat that the body has stored up, which can make the pet lose weight and act as if they are starving, even if they are eating well.

Raised in Cottonwood, Chelsey grew up riding horses and befriending the many animals she had at home, from dogs, goats and chickens to a feral younger brother. The passion for animals started early and she became a veterinary technician in high school. She then attended college at Northern Arizona University, going on to earn her veterinary degree at Colorado State University. However, her heart has always been in Arizona, and she returned, first to Sedona's red rocks for several years, then moved up to Flagstaff where she joined the amazing Westside team in 2017. Dr. Calhoun is a Certified Veterinary Medical Acupuncturist and she has a passion not only for acupuncture, but also internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, and pain management. She also enjoys treating and continuing to learn about exotic animals. She loves living in Flagstaff with her husband Luke, twin baby girls Avery and Ella, newborn, Lucy, and her small zoo at home, including two dogs (Scout and Howie), two cats (Oliver and Sir Furguson), two parakeets (Ravenclaw and Hedwig), two rabbits (Furbert and Hamlet) and eight chickens (too many to name!).

Neutering is the process in which both of the testicles are surgically removed. Male dogs and cats will both go through significant personality and behavioral changes as they mature and neutering your pet will help to prevent these changes from becoming problematic. It is strongly suggested that neutering take place at or after 6 months of age for dogs and between 6-9 months of age for cats. Waiting until they reach this age will help to allow for proper hormonal development to occur but help to prevent them from obtaining unwanted behavioral habits. The longer unwanted behavioral habits continue, the less likely it is that neutering will help to correct them.
