Dental Examination
Periodontal disease is diagnosed by your dentist or dental hygienist during a periodontal examination. This type of exam should always be part of your regular dental check-up.
X-rays
Initially, surgeons will work to close the cleft openings in the first six months of the childâ€™s life. Unfortunately, this does not cure the dental problems that occur as a result of cleft lip and cleft palate defects. The dentist will perform a thorough examination of the teeth surrounding the deformity. Panoramic x-rays will generally be taken to allow the dentist to determine the best course of treatment.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Teeth Cleaning
Brushing and flossing are of paramount importance to oral hygiene. Though bi-annual professional dental cleanings remove plaque, tartar, and debris, excellent homecare methods are equally valuable. Proper brushing and flossing can enhance the health of the mouth, make the smile sparkle, and prevent serious diseases.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride Treatment: To mineralize and boost the strength of your tooth enamel and prevent cavities. This treatment is especially important in areas where fluoride is not added to the water supply.
Dental Sealants
Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.

Fillings
There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. You and your dentist can discuss the best options for restoring your teeth. Composite fillings, along with silver amalgam fillings, are the most widely used today. Because composite fillings are tooth colored, they can be closely matched to the color of existing teeth, and are more aesthetically suited for use in front teeth or more visible areas of the mouth.
Resin Composite
Crowns: They're suitable if you're only missing one tooth. It replaces the entire tooth, from root to crown. The top crown is usually composed of porcelain, ceramic, or composite resin.
Veneers
Veneers are very thin pieces of durable, tooth shaped porcelain that are custom made (for shape and color) by a professional dental laboratory. They are bonded onto the front of teeth to create a beautiful and attractive smile.
Crowns
The teeth are held firmly in place by strong roots that extend into the jawbone. Molars and premolars tend to have several roots, whereas the front incisors only have a single root. The end or tip of each root is termed the apex. The apex is where the nerves and blood vessels enter the tooth and aids in the delivery of blood to the crown (the part of the tooth you can see in your mouth).
Bridges
Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years; however, they may need replacement or need to be re-cemented due to normal wear.
Dental Bonding
Composite Bonding and Filling: Composite repairs a tooth affected by fractures, cracks, or decays. We remove the affected part and fill it with a natural-colored composite filling.

Root Canal Treatment
Small Adjoining Root Branches â€“ Roots are extremely complex and can contain many tiny branches. If these tiny branches cannot be cleaned and sealed when the root canal treatment is performed, inflammation can persist.
Apicoectomy
A root canal treatment refers to the cleaning of the canals and the removal of infected and inflamed tissue within the root. When the inflammation or infection persists after the root canal treatment, an apicoectomy may be required. An apicoectomy is essentially the removal of the apex (or root tip), followed by a filling procedure to seal the root from further infection. When left untreated, infected roots can damage other teeth, spread infection, and cause regression of the jawbone.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Gingivoplasty (soft tissue recontouring) â€“ As gums recede due to periodontitis, the teeth may appear longer; causing a â€œtoothy" smile. The periodontist can remove tissues or straighten the gum line to make the teeth look more even.
Periodontal Surgery
If the pockets do not heal after scaling and root planing, periodontal surgery may be needed to reduce pocket depths, making teeth easier to clean. Your dentist may also recommend that you see a periodontist (specialist of the gums and supporting bone).
Deep Cleaning
Improved gum health â€“ Periodontal disease is a progressive condition that can destroy soft tissue very rapidly. When used in combination with deep cleaning procedures, soft tissue grafting can halt tissue and bone loss, and protect exposed roots from further complications.

Dentures
A denture is a removable dental appliance and a replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and may even enhance your smile.

Dental Implants
A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root which is attached to the jaw bone. Eventually, a replacement tooth or bridge will be firmly fixed to this root, restoring complete function to the tooth. The key to a successful and long-lasting implant is the quality and quantity of jawbone to which the implant will be attached. If bone has been lost due to injury or periodontal disease, a sinus augmentation can raise the sinus floor to allow for new bone formation.

Oral Surgery
After completing his general practice residency at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 2004, Dr. Yang joined True North Dentistry and is now a partner in the practice. Dr. Yang particularly enjoys solving complex dental issues and resolving debilitating dental pain for his patients. To assist in these matters, Dr. Yang has spent countless hours furthering his education in endodontics (root canals), dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, oral surgery, TMD and complicated restorative cases (full mouth rehabilitation). He also continues to be a professor at Northern Arizona University (NAU) where he enjoys sharing his knowledge of dentistry and serving the greater student population. Dr. Yang spends countless hours each year volunteering his dental services to local charities, benefiting the local Flagstaff community. Apart from his dental commitments, Dr. Yang enjoys spending time with his wife Dr. Felicia Bleecker-Yang and their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Princess Petunia Crumpet. Dr. Yang is proud to announce the birth of his first child, Barron James, in the fall.
Jaw Surgery
Orthognathic surgery refers to the surgical correction needed to fix substantial abnormalities of the maxilla (upper jaw), the mandible (lower jaw), or both. The abnormality may be a birth defect, a growth defect, or the result of traumatic injuries to the jaw area.
Flap Surgery
Pocket elimination surgery â€“ Pocket elimination surgery (also known as flap surgery) is a surgical treatment which can be performed to reduce the pocket size between the teeth and gums. Surgery on the jawbone is another option which serves to eliminate indentations in the bone which foster the colonization of bacteria.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Tooth Extractions
If you are experiencing extreme sensitivity or are suffering from advanced periodontal disease, you may be required to have a tooth extracted. With a simple extraction, the dentist can safely remove the affected tooth without the need for major surgery.
Ridge Augmentation
Ridge augmentation â€“ This procedure, often called â€œrecontouringâ€ may be required to correct an uneven gum line. Before embarking on treatment, a periodontist needs to treat any bacterial infections and periodontitis.
Bone Grafting
Autogenous bone graft â€“ In this type of graft the bone is removed from elsewhere in the body and implanted in the mouth. Common donor sites for bone grafting include the iliac section of the pelvis, the chin and the posterior third molar areas of the jaw. If large amounts of bone need to be harvested, the hip or the shin bone (tibia) is generally used.

Orthodontics
Invisalign is a state-of-the-art alternative to traditional metal braces. Unlike conventional orthodontics, this innovative treatment option uses clear aligners to reposition the teeth. The aligners are swapped out and replaced with new trays that gradually correct tooth position. Once treatment is complete, you will enjoy a straight, uniform smile.
Invisalign Orthodontics
The trays must be worn a minimum of 22 hours a day, which requires commitment and diligence. Adults and responsible teens with mild-to-moderate misalignment issues are the best candidates for Invisalign.
Braces
Â€“ Traditional orthodontic braces require enough space to for the teeth to move into ideal alignment. If space cannot be created naturally, a tooth may be extracted as an alternative.
