I grew up on a farm near Canby, a small town in southwestern Minnesota. Following high school, I attended Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, graduating with a BA degree in December 1994. I received my optometric training at the Indiana University School of Optometry. My last year of training consisted of four different rotations of three months each; two of these rotations were spent at VA hospitals (in West Virginia and Illinois), which I found very rewarding. The other two rotations were in Indiana, one in Indianapolis, and the other at our school in Bloomington. Throughout my rotations I gained invaluable experience in primary care optometry, pediatric optometry, contact lenses, and ocular disease. I graduated with honors in May of 1999.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is the primary cause of blindness in adults over age 60. Known as the â€œsilent thief of sight,â€ vision loss from glaucoma occurs slowly over time. Since there are no initial symptoms, the disease can go undetected for years â€” most patients donâ€™t realize they have glaucoma until they experience vision loss.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a common eye disease that causes damage to the macula, an area near the center of the retina that is responsible for sharp central vision. The macula controls your ability to focus on fine details. Damage to the macula can impair your ability to read, drive a vehicle, or recognize faces.
Laser Eye Surgery
LASIK is the most advanced of the refractive surgery techniques. Years ago there was radial keratotomy (or RK). This was followed several years later by PRK, or the first laser technique. We were not comfortable with RK and never recommended the procedure. We became more interested in refractive surgery with the advent of PRK, but still had some questions and again, never recommended it to our patients. With both techniques, we had concerns about long-term safety and accuracy.
Cataracts
Cataracts. A cataract occurs when the lens of the eye becomes clouded with proteins, which results in blurry vision. While itâ€™s normal for cataracts to develop with age, adults with diabetes are 2-5 times more likely to have cataracts. Diabetic patients also develop cataracts at a younger age than most people.

Diabetic Retinopathy. The retina is a light-sensitive layer of tissue at the back of the eye. In diabetics, high blood sugar levels can cause blood vessels in the retina to leak blood or fluid, which can result in distorted vision or permanent blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss in people with diabetes.
