As part of our holistic view of your overall health, we will recommend you have a colonoscopy at age 50 or above (and at regular intervals after that) to screen for colon cancer or pre-cancerous conditions, and we will review your personal history to look for risks for other cancers. A careful review of family history, regular gynecologic examinations, and education about the warning signs of breast, cervical, and ovarian cancers are part of your basic care at our practice. If you are concerned about a symptom or condition that arises, please call our office to set up an appointment.

We administer the HPV vaccine at our office for any of our patients who wish to receive it. It appears to be effective in 85% or more of women who receive the full series of vaccinations.

Most women start having annual mammograms at age 40; in certain circumstances we might recommend you start earlier. We offer in-house mammography or can provide appropriate referrals, if needed, to be performed at a local radiology center which will send us your test results. We will review those results with you personally.
Mammography
In addition to manual breast exams, mammograms provide the true inside look into what’s happening in the breast tissue and will help diagnose problems that are detected or detect imminent problems that are not yet visible on the surface. We recommend mammography once a year for all women beginning at age 40. In certain situations, we may advise you to start getting mammograms at an earlier age. Once the results of your mammogram are in we will review the mammogram report with you personally.

Vasectomy
Permanent sterilization — such as tubal ligation (tying off your fallopian tubes) and vasectomy for men (performed by a urologist). These outpatient surgical procedures are not considered reversible (although this is not impossible) so they require very careful consideration. If you and your partner are considering vasectomy we can refer you to a trusted physician in the area.
