NeurologyNeuro-ophthalmologists take care of visual problems that are related to the nervous system; that is, visual problems that do not come from the eyes themselves. We use almost half of the brain for vision-related activities, including sight and moving the eyes. Neuro-ophthalmology, a subspecialty of both neurology and ophthalmology, requires specialized training and expertise in problems of the eye, brain, nerves and muscles.
MRIThe neuro-ophthalmologist will need all relevant information prior to your appointment, including office notes, results of laboratory tests and reports of CT and MRI scans. If you do not have a doctor referring you please make an appointment with one of our Eye Associates of New Mexico doctors. If your condition requires a neuro-ophthalmic visit, you will be referred by our doctors.
Eye ExamAny age, even in the newborn nursery. We are able to perform a comprehensive eye exam on infants and also provide vision tests for those three months and older.
Cataract SurgeryA cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision. Most cataracts are related to aging. Cataracts are very common in older people. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. A cataract can occur in either or both eyes. It cannot spread from one eye to the other.
GlaucomaThe glaucoma service is a department within Eye Associates of New Mexico offering full service Glaucoma related treatment by two fellowship trained ophthalmologists combining 20 plus years of experience. All aspects of glaucoma diagnosis and treatment are covered using the latest in diagnostic and treatment modalities.

Macular DegenerationThis question cannot be answered as of yet. The National Eye Institutes have sponsored many nationally conducted studies that guide glaucoma therapy for all ophthalmologists in the United States. Research in vitamins have yielded good results for some ocular conditions such as Age Related Macular Degeneration, however, there is no definitive evidence as of yet that vitamins specifically prevent glaucoma. Also, alternative medicine may be useful, however, we have no studies conducted in a controlled manner as with studies sponsored by the National Eye Institutes to specifically document prevention of the glaucoma. Future studies may clarify the situation.
Laser Eye SurgeryLASIK is similar to PRK, however the laser procedure is done under the surface of the cornea rather than on the surface. During LASIK surgery, an instrument called a micokeratome is used to elevate the front third of the cornea allowing the laser correction to be done underneath the surface. The front "flap" is then gently laid back down and is self healing. LASIK is our preferred method of vision correction because it allows for rapid return of vision with little discomfort and time off work. LASIK has also allowed the patient to have both eyes done on the same day for added convenience. Our New Mexico LASIK eye surgeons are dedicated to excellence is LASIK surgery. We offer LASIK consultations for those patien interested in learning if LASIK New Mexico is a good option for vision correction. Contact at your convenience for a LASIK consultation.
CataractsCongenital cataract. Some babies are born with cataracts or develop them in childhood, often in both eyes. These cataracts may be so small that they do not affect vision. If they do, the lenses may need to be removed.
LesionsNeuro-ophthalmic disorders encompass a wide range of problems including unexplained visual loss, hereditary retinal dystrophies, optic nerve and chiasmal lesions, brain tumor, stroke, double vision, nystagmus, thyroid eye disease, atypical headache, temporal arteritis, hydrocephalus, myasthenia gravis, pupillary asymmetry, and visual field defects. The examination is augmented by ancillary studies, e.g., CT and MRI.
