Dry Eye is a condition in which there is a deficiency of the tear film that is due to either an insufficient production of natural tears or an excessive evaporation of tears. Systemic conditions such as Sjorgren’s Syndrome or autoimmune connective tissue diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus Erythematosus, inflammation of the Lacrimal Gland, long term contact lens wear, past eye infections, medications such as antihistamines or allergy medicine, blood pressure medicine, certain allergies and even vitamin deficiencies may decrease the quantity of tears that you produce. Your tears may evaporate too quickly if you suffer from low-grade eyelid inflammation, called blepharitis, which is often caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), a problem within the tiny tubular glands in your eyelids. Hormonal changes make perimenopausal woman particularly susceptible to dry eyes. Whether you suffer from insufficient production of tears or excessive evaporation of tears, or both, you may experience a decrease in the quantity and quality of your tear film resulting in the surface of the eye being affected.

Primary Care
We participate in most health insurance plans and will be glad to submit a claim on your behalf. In many circumstances, you are responsible only for applicable co-payments and deductibles before the visit. However, not all insurance plans cover routine eye care, which would mean that, payment is required on the day of your exam for all services not covered. It is important to realize that insurance companies have different plans such as HMO’s, PPO’s, and PHO’s. Please check your insurance handbook or check with your insurance company before scheduling an appointment to be sure that we are a participating provider. It is important to bring your insurance cards with you for every office visit. Some plans require you to obtain authorization for services from your primary care provider (internist, family practitioner, pediatrician, etc.). It is your responsibility to obtain this authorization from your primary care provider. If this information is required by your insurance company, this must be done before you visit our office. Failure to obtain a valid referral may result in the patient being financially responsible for any charges incurred.

In the event that Center for Sight Retinal Specialist Robert Kelly, M.D. diagnoses you with a Retinal Artery Occlusion, or identifies a warning sign that you might be at risk for a Retinal Artery Occlusion because he observes the presence of a “plaque” in one or more of your retinal arteries, he will promptly refer you to your Internist or Cardiologist for thorough evaluation and testing including a blood pressure evaluation, electrocardiogram (EKG), fasting blood glucose, lipid and cholesterol levels, and hyper viscosity studies in order to help better understand your overall health.

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness for patients between the ages of 18-65 years of age. It is estimated that approximately 3 million people have Glaucoma and only half actually know it! Glaucoma is such a significant threat to sight because whereas most serious eye diseases or eye conditions produce some symptoms that make patients uncomfortable or disturb their vision-glaucoma begins without any symptoms or obvious loss of vision! Glaucoma is quite insidious and, if not diagnosed and treated early in its course, will lead to progressive and permanent vision loss. This is what makes glaucoma such a dangerous disease. Many patients are under the impression that glaucoma is just due to a high pressure within the eye. While a high intraocular pressure (IOP) certainly can be one cause of glaucoma, and in fact is the most common cause, a high IOP is not the only cause of glaucoma. It is entirely possible to have a higher than normal Intraocular Pressure (IOP) and vision loss and simply not know it. Fortunately, glaucoma is treatable, and in many cases patients retain excellent vision throughout their lives.
Ophthalmology
Eye Plastic Surgery, also called Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery or Oculoplastic Surgery, is a subspecialty of Ophthalmology that deals with the evaluation and treatment of deformities, abnormalities and trauma of the eyelids, lacrimal or tear structures, bony orbit and the adjacent facial areas and overlying skin and soft tissue. Eye Plastic Surgery is a unique specialty that relies on the surgeon's technical expertise as well as his or her artistic skill and ability. Ophthalmic plastic surgeons perform cosmetic and reconstructive procedures in and around the delicate eye structures.
Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration or Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common senior eye problem that is an incurable eye disease. It is the leading cause of legal blindness for those aged 55 and older in the United States, affecting more than 10 million Americans in some fashion. The Macula is responsible for providing central vision which is the sharpest or clearest area of your vision and is required for activities such as seeing fine detail of faces, reading and recognizing colors. The Macula provides you with the precise vision required for driving a car and is responsible for central or “straight ahead” vision. Your chances of developing Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) are directly related to your age. The older you are, the greater the chance that Macular Degeneration will affect you.
Laser Eye Surgery
Laser Vision Correction is the general term given to the group of procedures using Laser Eye Surgery for the correction of the common vision problems of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Bladeless LASIK is the most common type of Laser Eye Surgery that we use at Center for Sight. PRK, LASIK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK and Custom LASIK are all different types of Corneal Laser Eye Surgery that also can be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism and help patients become less dependent or even eliminate the need for eyeglasses and contacts for seeing clearly at a distance.
Cataracts
Cataracts are a very common senior eye problem we see at Center for Sight in Fall River. The Crystalline Lens is usually soft, flexible and “crystal” clear in our younger years. In fact, it has excellent transparency and optical clarity. As we progress through our 50’s and 60’s, the normally “crystal” clear lens may gradually become yellow and cloudy. When this occurs, you may initially experience a mild blurring of your vision and feel that you might need a change of eyeglasses.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery at Center for Sight in Fall River is safe, effective, convenient and quite common. If you suspect that you have a cataract or have been told that you have a cataract, there is little need to be alarmed. In the United States, more than 2.5 million people have cataract surgery each year. Thanks to advanced surgical techniques and advanced lens implants, cataract surgery is not only one of the most frequently performed surgical procedures in the United States, but it is also one of the safest and most successful surgical procedures that you can have.
Eye Exam
Additional tests that your doctor may perform to further evaluate the macula during your eye exam can include checking your color vision and an Amsler Grid Test, which helps identify distortion of your central vision, and may be an indication of small amounts of swelling or fluid under the macula.

Diabetic Retinopathy
Depending on the stage of diabetic retinopathy and the potential for and the amount of vision loss, it is possible to treat, stabilize and often reverse the effects of the disease. Treatment of diabetic retinopathy can entail the use retinal laser photocoagulation treatment as well as intravitreal injections of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) Inhibitor drugs or other drugs. However, successful management of diabetic eye problems requires early diagnosis and treatment.

Ultrasound
Your Center for Sight eye surgeon will gently pass another high technology microscopic instrument through the tiny incision. Sound waves or “Ultrasound” produced at the tip of the instrument will be used to gently break the cataract into pieces small enough to be washed away, drawn through the instrument and removed from your eye. This cataract removal technique is called “phacoemulsification” and is preferred for most patients.
Computed Tomography
Optical Coherence Tomography or OCT is a high technology imaging test that allows the eye doctors at the Center for Sight to produce high resolution cross sectional views of the structures of your eye without ever touching it. In some ways, this is analogous to CT Scans that are used to “image’ organ systems in other parts of your body. The OCT test consists of multiple scans, and each scan takes about 45-60 seconds, the total test time is between 10-20 minutes. Since it is a non-contact, non-invasive testing method, it is not uncomfortable or difficult for patients. We perform Optical Coherence Tomography and its interpretation right in the comfort and convenience of our office at Center for Sight.

Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid Blepharoplasty involves the improvement of two characteristics of the aging upper eyelid area. The first is correction of excess skin of the upper eyelid, a condition referred to as "hooding of the upper lid." The second condition that can be corrected is the puffiness that is seen in the inner corner and middle of the eyelid as a result of herniation (pushing forward) of fat located in these areas above the eye. Upper eyelid Blepharoplasty is commonly performed at the same time as lower eyelid Blepharoplasty. Upper eyelid Blepharoplasty does not correct crow’s feet, eliminate dark circles under your eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.
