Calculus cannot be removed by brushing and can only be removed through a regular dental cleaning performed by a hygienist. Untreated, plaque can result in the pockets of the gums becoming deeper, a severe condition known as periodontitis. These deeper pockets expose more of the supporting bone and tissue that retain the teeth and prevent decay and infection. Severe periodontal disease can result in oral problems such as tooth loss and tissue recession as the bone breaks down and the teeth become demineralized.

When a tooth is not replaced immediately, the jawbone area beneath the tooth shrinks because of the lack of chewing and biting stimulation. Dentures and bridges do not provide this stimulation and can accelerate the rate of depletion.

Bone Grafting
After the procedure, you may have some swelling in the surgery area. There can be some bleeding from the mouth or nose. Make sure you do not blow your nose or sneeze with force. Your dentist may give you pain medicine, antibiotics and anti-bacterial mouthwash to prevent infection. After a sinus procedure, you need to wait for the bone material to harden.
