For pregnancy to occur, an egg must be fertilized by a sperm. When fertilization happens inside the body, it is called in vivo fertilization. When fertilization happens outside of the body, it is called in vitro fertilization, or IVF. IVF can help treat infertility in patients who have damaged fallopian tubes, male factor infertility, endometriosis, unexplained infertility or along with PGD (preimplantation genetic diagnosis).

Approximately 48.5 million couples experience infertility, worldwide ( Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology Journal ). Fertility concerns are relatively common, yet defining what infertility is can seem a bit confusing. There are a variety of factors that can lead to infertility, and in some cases patients are diagnosed with unexplained infertility. What is infertility, anyway?

Ultrasound
Monitor the development of ripening egg(s) in the ovaries. Fertility medications are prescribed to control the timing of egg ripening and to increase the chance of collecting multiple eggs. To monitor egg development, GIVF utilizes ultrasound examinations of the ovaries (a painless method of imaging the enlarging follicles containing the eggs), and the measurement of serial blood hormone levels. An injection of the hormone HCG is then precisely timed to cause final ripening of the eggs.

Though advances in medical research and medicines have led to higher survival rates for cancer patients, many survivors are told after treatment that their fertility has been compromised by chemotherapy, radiation, or certain surgeries.
Radiation Therapy

Vasectomy
If male factor infertility is an issue, donor egg IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) into the eggs is also available. Non-surgical sperm aspiration (NSA) can be used in association with ICSI if a patient has had a vasectomy and wishes to avoid vasectomy reversal, or there are other causes of the absence of sperm in the ejaculate. If donor sperm is needed, many highly-screened sperm donors are available from our in-house sperm bank, Fairfax Cryobank.
