Dental Care
Dental care is vital to the overall health of any animal. Dental disease leads to health issues with the heart, liver, and kidneys, and can affect the entire body through the bloodstream. In fact, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over three years of age suffer from some form of dental disease, making it the most common pet health issue among our pet population in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Vaccination
You can get there from here, but you have to cross the border or get on an airplane to do it and if your furry friend is going along you will most likely need to get an official health certificate within 10 days of travel. Each of the 50 states as well as every foreign country has its own rules for animal imports and also may have different rules for each species of animal. Pet owners travelling to Hawaii as well as overseas need to do significant planning ahead of travel. Please contact the clinic well in advance of your trip to determine what paperwork, vaccinations and possibly lab tests need to be done before your trip. On the day of your appointment, plan on coming in 10-15 minutes prior to your appointment to deal with the necessary paperwork.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Cole began practicing at Aurora Animal Clinic in April 2008. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, in 1999. She initially moved from Canada to Juneau in the year of 2000 and arrived in Fairbanks in 2008. Dr. Cole is certified for PennHip radiographs and her special interests are Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Rehabilitation and Endocrine Disorders.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Thankfully, heartworms and fleas are nearly non-existent in Alaska and control programs for these problems are not necessary unless you plan to travel “Outside”. We do still see pets having problems with mosquitos, lice, nasal mites, intestinal parasites, etc. We carry a wide variety of products to suit your pet’s needs for parasite control.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Small dogs and large dogs will actually respond to acupuncture differently. Small dogs will typically come and receive acupuncture because of musculoskeletal problems such as arthritis, intervertebral disk disease, or traumatic nerve injury. They also come in for skin problems such as lick granulomas and allergic dermatitis. Acupuncture can assist in healing all of these problems.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Vaccinations - Rabies vaccines are required for travel and the currency period is determined by the state of destination. All dogs and cats risk exposure to other species specific diseases, to include Leptospirosis (canine) and Leukemia (feline). Vaccinations to protect against other diseases are not mandatory, but we highly recommend keeping them current.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
Aurora K9 Sports Medicine is a division of Aurora Animal Clinic providing rehabilitation services to the Fairbanks area pet community. Our services include recovery from injury or surgery, helping pets with osteoarthritis, neurological disease, weight loss, and/or conditioning. Our program is led by Dr. Barb Cole, who obtained certification as a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner through the University of Tennessee in 2014. Dr. Cole regularly attends a variety of continuing education events in the field, allowing us to stay on top of the latest developments in canine rehabilitation and sports medicine.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Improved strength and conditioning can increase performance in sports, help prevent injury during athletic or day-to-day activities, and can potentially slow the progression of degenerative joint disease in pets with known orthopedic issues such as hip dysplasia. Dogs can come for regular aquatic exercise sessions in the underwater treadmill, or we can consult regarding an overall exercise program (both in clinic and at home) tailored to the needs of you and your pet.
Obesity Treatment
For older pets slowing down from general arthritis, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, or old injuries, an exercise program incorporating aquatic exercise can help maintain your pet’s cardiovascular abilities and muscle mass while putting less stress and strain on the joints. Increased muscle mass, range of motion, weight loss in overweight pets and overall conditioning, improves mobility and helps alleviate a lot of older pets’ discomfort.
Cancer Treatment

Veterinary Surgery
Dr. Childs was raised in Philadelphia, PA and completed her undergraduate degree and Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT. She graduated from Cornell University in 2017 with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Childs moved to Alaska to join the veterinary team in July of 2017. Her special interests include soft tissue and orthopedic surgery, as well as sled dog and sports medicine.

The staff at AAC encourages spaying and neutering not only to promote pet population control but for the medical and mental benefits as well. Did you know that a female dog spayed before two years of age has almost no chance of mammary neoplasia, whereas 1 in 4 unspayed dogs or those spayed over two years of age will get some form of breast cancer? Intact males are prone to prostate problems and testicular cancer? We encourage you to discuss the best time to spay and neuter your pet with one of our doctors on an individual basis.
