Electrocardiogram

Partial knee replacement repairs the side of the knee joint that is damage instead of the entire joint surface as in total knee replacement.

Arthroscopy
Also called arthroscopy, the procedure is performed in a hospital or outpatient surgical facility. The type of anesthesia (local, spinal, or general) and the length of the procedure depends on the joint operated on and the complexity of the suspected problem. Arthroscopic surgery rarely takes more than an hour. Most patients who have arthroscopic surgery are released that same day; some patients stay in the hospital overnight.

Joint Replacement
A Total Joint Replacement is when an arthritic or damaged joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint, called a prosthesis. The goal is to relieve the pain in the joint caused by the damage done to the cartilage. The pain may be so severe, a person will avoid using the joint, weakening the muscles around the joint and making it even more difficult to move the joint.

Many Arkansans enjoy an active lifestyle, engaging in a variety of sports, fitness and outdoor fun. Quality of life can be greatly hindered when you encounter problems with your muscles and joints. Your body has many different functioning, moving parts, and it requires maintenance. Often, the pain you feel may be eased with an over-the-counter medication. Sometimes, though, the tendon, muscle or joint pain you feel requires a doctor’s visit. If you have a sprain, an overuse injury, knee pain or shoulder pain, often times it will be relieved with conservative care. However sometimes, with other injuries orthopedic surgery may be necessary.

Dr. Massanelli is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a member of the Arkansas Medical Society, Arthroscopy Association of North America and Alpha Omega Alpha and the Southern Medical Association. In addition, he is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Massanelli currently serves as the Medical Director of South Arkansas Surgery Center, Medical Director for Southern Arkansas University, Team Physician for Southern Arkansas University, Adjunct Faculty for UAMS and sits on the Ortho Advisory Board for Amsurg.
Hip Replacement
If hip pain is keeping you up at night and making it difficult for you to get up from chairs, stand, walk, or use stairs, a total hip replacement (THR) surgery may be a possible treatment option. The goal of a total hip replacement is to reduce hip pain and improve the motion in your hip.
Knee Replacement
When it seems like you've tried everything and still don't have any relief from your knee pain and debilitation, it may be time to consider knee replacement surgery. There are two different types of knee replacement procedures your doctor may recommend to relieve your knee pain, partial knee replacement, also called uni-compartmental replacement, or total knee replacement. Learning the differences can help you have a better discussion with your doctor. In knee replacement surgery, the ends of the bones that make up the knee are repaired. The new joint works the way cartilage works in a healthy knee by preventing the bones of the leg from rubbing together at the joint.

Physical Therapy
Each patient recovers differently. After surgery, you will work with a physical therapist to gradually increase your knee strength and mobility. You may experience some pain during physical therapy. The good news is that medications can help you manage this pain, and it should be temporary. The hard work you do in the early weeks of rehab will pay off with improved strength and motion, which will help reduce stiffness in your knee.
