Dental Examination
Your dental hygienist will review your medical and dental history and you will have the opportunity to share with her your reasons for being here, your dental and health concerns, as well as your desires for your mouth. From these radiographs, photographs and a comprehensive exam, Dr. Schick can document your past dental history and determine your current oral health.
X-rays
Oral Cancer Screening
Upon completing the necessary radiographs, your dental hygienist will begin gathering information to assist Dr. Schick in completing his examination of your mouth. We will take a series of extraoral photographs of your mouth. Your hygienist will palpate your neck and face assessing for any abnormalities, as well as an oral cancer screening. She will completely chart existing conditions in your mouth including previously restored or extracted teeth, as well as a complete periodontal charting to help determine the health of your gums and bone support. She will discuss treatment needs with you and show videos to help explain possible problems, reasons for treatment and treatment options.

Teeth Cleaning
A dental cleaning (prophylaxis): This includes scaling plaque, polishing teeth, flossing, assessing your mouth’s cleanliness, and providing oral hygiene instructions. If you wish to learn more about proper brushing and flossing techniques, ask your dentist about it at this stage of the visit.
Fluoride Treatment
General, preventative dentistry should start early. A child’s first dental visit should take place at 6 to 12 months after birth. Regular fluoride treatments, administered by a dentist, are especially helpful in strengthening enamel and arresting tooth decay for children. Dental Sealants
In addition to the meticulous cleaning, polishing, and examination of your teeth, we also take the time to help our patients develop proper oral hygiene habits at home. We will evaluate your hygiene techniques and make adjustments to your routine where needed. Our doctor and hygienists will also make suggestions for preventative measures such as dental sealants or nightguards to protect against bruxism & TMJ.

Fillings
Amalgam or “mercury/silver” fillings contain mercury and are often referred to as metal fillings. Their safety has been in question for a number of years due to concerns over the absorption of elemental mercury contributing to several diseases, including Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, dementia, and arthritis. The FDA investigations have not proven that the minute amount of mercury vapors released from silver fillings is a health hazard. Amalgam fillings are a mixture of mercury liquid and small pieces of silver and other metals such as copper, tin, and zinc. Studies released in 2009 and endorsed by the American Dental Association verified the safety of “mercury/silver fillings” as a restorative material.
Resin Composite
Tooth fillings colored to look like a natural tooth are known as “Composite Resin Dental Fillings” and are made of a plastic dental resin. There are no known health risks for receiving composite fillings. Composite resin dental fillings were created as an alternative to traditional metal dental fillings. Composite resin dental fillings are strong, durable, and make for a very natural-looking smile. Many dental insurance plans cover their use.
Veneers
Dental veneers (sometimes called porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates) are wafer-thin, custom-made shells of tooth-colored materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve your smile and appearance. These shells are bonded to the front of the teeth changing their color, shape, size, or length.
Crowns
These partial crowns are utilized when there is still a healthy enamel portion of the tooth. An inlay or onlay is like a puzzle piece that will be fitted into the remaining portion of the tooth to help increase its strength. This piece is usually crafted out of porcelain or gold, but can also be made of a composite material. We will make the determination as to which restoration will work best in your specific situation.
Bridges
Improved oral health. Dental implants don’t require reducing other teeth, as a tooth-supported fixed bridge does. Because nearby teeth are not altered to support the implant, more of your own teeth are left intact, improving your long-term oral health. Individual implants also allow easier access between teeth, improving oral hygiene.
Dental Bonding
Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-colored resin (composite) material (a durable plastic material) is applied and hardened with a special light. This ultimately “bonds or cures” the material to the tooth to restore or improve a person’s smile.
Restorative Dentistry
Brush at least twice daily using a soft-bristle toothbrush and an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste. This helps prevent tooth decay, gum disease, and the need for costly cosmetic or restorative dentistry in the future. Replace your brush every two to three months.

Root Canal Treatment
Root Canal, or Endodontics, is the process of removing the nerves within the roots of a tooth. A root canal is often necessary to save an infected tooth. If an infected tooth is left alone for a long period of time, an abscess can form. An abscess will show up on an x-ray as a dark spot below the apex of the root. This is actually bone loss in the jaw. It is very important to catch this problem before it deteriorates too far.

Deep Cleaning
To stop periodontal (gum) disease from progressing, your dentist may advise periodontal therapy or deep cleaning. This gets rid of the bacteria in the pocket and provides the necessary conditions for healing to occur.

Dentures
I want to thank you for giving me back my smile. You also gave me a reason to smile. Due to years of neglect and six months of chemotherapy and radiation my teeth were gone, falling out and breaking off. A hopeless situation I thought. Dr. Schick, you made an assessment we couldn’t save any of my teeth. You removed all of my remaining teeth with the least amount of pain. As I healed you discovered a lot of problems with the bone chips. You took the time to prepare my gums, taking care of my bone problems so I could wear dentures in comfort. It was a big success. I now have my dentures that fit perfectly and look natural. I can eat again and my self-esteem is much improved.

Dental Implants

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
In most cases, anyone healthy enough to undergo a routine dental extraction or oral surgery can be considered for a dental implant. Patients should have healthy gums and enough bone to hold the implant. They also must be committed to good oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Heavy smokers, people suffering from uncontrolled chronic disorders – such as diabetes or heart disease – or patients who have had radiation therapy to the head/neck area need to be evaluated on an individual basis. If you are considering implants, talk to your dentist to see if they are right for you.
Tooth Extractions
Most people who have received dental implants say there is very little discomfort involved in the procedure. Local anesthesia is used during the procedure, and most patients report that implant placement is much easier than a tooth extraction. General anesthesia is available for those who desire it. Dr. Schick will refer you to an oral surgeon for the implant placement and you can visit with him about the anesthesia that is right for you. We want you to be comfortable during this procedure.
Bone Grafting
Nearly anyone who is missing one or more teeth, and desires a superior, long-lasting aesthetic result is a good candidate for dental implants. However, patients must have enough bone to support and stabilize the implant. Some individuals who have suffered bone loss as a result of gum disease or another condition may need bone grafting before a dental implant can be placed successfully. Cosmetic and Aesthetic Dentistry are terms used to describe the process in dentistry of achieving what individuals perceive as beauty in art or nature in a patient’s smile. The goal of cosmetic dentistry is to enhance the natural beauty of the mouth and face resulting in a pleasing appearance of a person’s smile. The term “aesthetics” is derived from the Greek word “aesthesia” which means sensation or sensibility belonging to the appreciation of the beautiful. That is where the “a” in aesthetics was derived. Invisalign Orthodontics
A series of clear plastic aligners are utilized to create tooth movement. Moving teeth with removable aligners are not new. However, the computer program, which can generate a series of aligners with small changes is new. Invisalign is recommended for orthodontic situations with mild to moderate spacing or crowding. They are virtually undetectable, easy to use and comfortable to wear.
