Overall

Last week Louie my 2 year old Pomeranian was shaking uncontrollably even his eyes were fluttering I took him to the emergency vet just blocks away from my house and they took him in back .and said it looks like he ate mold or rotten food . They started can IV and gave him something to stop the tremors it took a few doses to settle him down . His temp was so high he was going into heat stroke. They said he would have to spend the night so I left . A couple hours later I could not sleep so I went back there to see Louie and they were super nice took me in back and he was sleeping in a kennel on a blanket. They said he threw up a few times it looked like spaghetti and paper grass and chili. They had to give him more meds to control the tremors. When I got home I searched the yard and found a garbage bag that was burned under the snow. As the snow is melting now a corner of it was exposed and that’s what Louie got into . These wonderful vets and staff saved Louie’s life . He is back to being fun little Louie even playing hard with his little buddy Earl

Overall
Knowledgeable and helpful

I have been to AEVS several times in the last few months and have received nothing but the best care. I was there last Saturday night and had to have one of my dogs euthanized. The staff was very understanding and compassionate.

Expensive

I brought my 13 year old dog into Affiliated Emergency Veterinary Service on a Saturday night because she was having trouble standing and did not want to get up. I brought her to the clinic when she was able to stand and seemed ok, but I wanted her to be looked at by a veterinarian. The vet on call diagnosed her with a splenic tumor after having an ultrasound. The vet gave me two options. She needed an emergency surgery because of possible bleeding to remove the tumor or have her euthanized. I was given an estimate for the surgery of over $3,500! I was stunned at the cost and the grim diagnosis of my pet.

In shock and not sure what I should do, I called another veterinarian with whom I have had vet care in the past and asked for advice. This person said if the dog was stable, she could wait until Monday to be seen. However, there was a risk that she could bleed again from the tumor. I took that risk because I was not ready to say goodbye to my dog and could not afford the surgery.

On Monday, my regular vet gave me an estimate for the surgery and it was for $800 to $1,000, a significant difference in cost.

The Affiliated Emergency Veterinary Service never talked to me about taking my dog home. They tried to strong arm me into paying the outrageous cost of surgery at the Emergency clinic and made me feel bad for making the decision to take her home. I am extremely happy that I did take that chance because I did have the tumor removed from my dog at her regular clinic and 4 weeks later she is a very active old lab.
