West Suburban Humane Society

I've volunteered at West Suburban for over 10 years and am very proud of it. If anyone is looking for a dog or cat this is the place to go.Everyone goes out of their way to make sure the animals are healthy and well loved. The building might be getting a bit old(we would love to have a new shelter) but we get by. Thanks for reading!

I was lucky enough to work at this shelter for only a few months before the birth of my child. A shelter that is run almost entirely by volunteers (when I worked there, I was one of five staff members but there were over 200 volunteers) the place is not glamourous. Forever bandaiding the buildings and surroundings - the care here is unlike other shelters. Everything, and I mean everything, goes into giving great care to the animals. They are clean, excercised, socialized, well fed, warm, temperment tested, have been cured of any illnesses they came in with, and often have been through obedience training if necessary. The staff had given their lives to the care of these animals. The volunteers are extraordinary, and the shelter could not operate without them. Not the easiest to adopt from (you must first be evaluated) West Suburban Humane Society knows that finding the right home is key to helping animals find their forever homes.



West Suburban is not an intake facility. Though they assist with strays and owner give-ups, they do not have the room for intake but instead take overflow from shelter intake facilities. Meaning adoptable animals that would be put down for cage space or passed on to other less desirable shelters are given another/better chance at West Suburban. Please give them a try if you're looking to adopt or volunteer.
