Introduction to Therapy Dog Visits
Jan 18, Sat 3 - 4:30pm; March 6, Thurs 10 - 11:30am; April 29, Tues 6 - 7:30pm. Thinking about doing Animal Assisted Activities and Therapy with your dog at nursing homes, hospitals, schools and more? Learn about this wonderful field and take a partial pre-test with your dog to see if the two of you are candidates yet. Instructor: Cherie Maitland While Cherie is not currently a Therapy Dog Evaluator, she is an AKC Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. Many of the Therapy Dog Evaluations include the majority of the 10 items from the CGC Test. She has passed the Delta Society/ Pet Partners Evaluation with 3 of her wonderful dogs, and has taken 2 through Lend A Heart's evaluation process. She started visiting with her registered Therapy Dog Pepper in 2009. She has gone with either Pepper, Bear, Lilly, and now Miles to convalescent hospitals, elementary schools, library reading programs with kids, retirement living communities and memory care units. As of Summer 2011, Cherie began training to become an evaluator for Delta Society/Pet Partners.

Preparation For Dog Sports

Cost: $99 per working team
(minimum 2 teams, maximum 4)Class will focus on building solid obedience skills needed in treibball, such as sit, down, stay with distractions, reliable recall with distractions. The goal is to get quick responses from each dog, and to improve the ability to work off leash and from a distance. Pre-requisites: Dogs should be at least 12 months old, able to focus on handler in a class environment, and to walk politely on leash and have strong Intermediate Obedience Skills - including some off-leash skills
Cost: $99 per working team
(minimum 2 teams, maximum 4) These classes will introduce dog and handler to the basic skills needed to play treibball: targeting, orientation, distance and ball driving. Successful completion of this introductory course qualifies the team to participate in the next level of training. Dog Pre-requisites: Ignore other dogs in class and pay attention to the handler. Walk quietly in heel position; it will be helpful if the dog can also work on your right. Demonstrate a solid stay of at least a minute, wait and recall. (Note: “Ball crazy” dogs will need excellent obedience skills and NOT bite or jump on the balls.) You will Need: Target mats of at least 5 different sizes; a set can be purchased at the first class for $8. Rewards – both toys and treats – will be an important part of the learning process. You may work with a leash initially (not less than 6’) but all work will be off leash by the end
