The groomers do a nice job. However... everyone else is very rude and unprofessional. We only went there for grooming but the staff is awful.

Vaccination
Basic vaccines include the feline "distemper" combination vaccine (feline panleukopenia virus, rhinotracheitis and calicivirus) and the rabies vaccine. The combination vaccine is started at 8-10 weeks of age, and given every 3-4 weeks until at least 14 weeks of age. The rabies virus vaccine is given once at over 12 weeks of age. Optional vaccines for kittens include the feline leukemia vaccine (FeLV) which is recommended for all indoor/outdoor and outdoor only cats, and for any cats who live with FeLV + housemates or housemates who go outside. The FeLV vaccine is started after 9 weeks of age and given one booster 3-4 weeks after the first dose. After the final booster vaccines, kitten vaccinations are good for 1 year.
Nutritional Counseling
Whelping occurs 63 days post-ovulation, +/- 2 days. Whelping occurs in 3 stages: Stage 1 during which the bitch is often restless, displays "nesting" behavior, panting, loss of appetite, and may have a drop in temperature, this stage can last up to 24 hours or more; Stage 2, which is active labor, with visible abdominal contractions, the passing of birth fluids, and eventual birth of each puppy, active contractions should not last more than 45 minutes without the birth of a puppy - call Dr. Chris immediately with any concerns; and Stage 3, the passing of the placentas and contraction of the uterus back to normal size. It is extremely important for breeders to be educated about the whelping process, and to be prepared with appropriate materials to provide the bitch and puppies a healthy and safe environment. As part of our well care program we recommend a yearly fecal check for all dogs and indoor/outdoor cats, to determine if they have become infected with intestinal parasites over the past year. This is especially important if there are any young children in the home, as children can also become infected with these parasites if the pet is not properly treated.

Cytauxzoonosis. This tick-borne disease spread by the American dog tick and lone star tick affects cats, many of whom die from the illness. Symptoms include high fever, weakness, fatigue, dehydration, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, enlarged lymph nodes, abdominal pain, seizures, and coma.

We now invite you and your pets into our hospital. We ask, however, that if you are sick (respiratory disease) or clients who have potentially been exposed or who have tested positive for COVID-19 to not bring their pets to the clinic. Please make other arrangements for the pet to be brought in.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Basic vaccines include the canine "distemper" combination vaccine (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus), Lyme disease vaccine (for this geographic area), and rabies vaccine. The distemper combination vaccine is started at 8-9 weeks of age and given every 3-4 weeks until at least 14 weeks of age. The Lyme disease vaccine is started after 9 weeks of age and given one booster 3-4 weeks after the first dose. The rabies virus vaccine is given once at over 12 weeks of age (we recommend this vaccine to be given by itself once all other vaccine boosters are completed, usually around 4-5 months of age). Optional vaccines include the leptospirosis vaccine (for dogs who live in wooded areas or enjoy hunting or hiking), and bordatella vaccine (usually required by boarding facilities and some training classes).

Inability to Move Back Legs. Has your cat suddenly started dragging it's back legs? The most common cause of the problem is a type of blood clot called a saddle thrombus, according to Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. A stroke, tumor, viral or fungal infection, tick bite, spinal inflammation, slipped disc, or a broken pelvis are among the other reasons for back leg paralysis or weakness.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
As mentioned previously, urine within a sperm sample will kill the sperm. It is important to have a stud dog urinate before any breeding or collection to avoid contamination due to a full bladder. Also, urinary tract infections and prostate problems can result in a decrease in the tone of the sphincter muscle which contracts during ejaculation to prevent the mixing of urine and semen. If the sphincter muscle tone is poor, urine can mix with the ejaculate and kill the sperm. Urinary tract and prostate infections can usually be treated with antibiotics, although severe or recurrent infections may require weeks to months of treatment. It is important to obtain one or more bacterial culture and sensitivity reports, and to work with a qualified veterinarian.

Arthritis Treatment
Supplements. Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, the same supplements people use, to ease arthritis pain may also be helpful for pets. Be sure to ask your pet's veterinarian about the proper dosage of any supplements.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Exclusions. Are certain conditions excluded from the coverage? What about chronic and long-term diseases and conditions? Will the policy cover care for your pet's diabetes or hip dysplasia? In some cases, insurers may cover new illnesses and injuries, but might exclude pre-existing illnesses or chronic conditions.
Obesity Treatment
Do you throw handfuls of food in your pet's dish instead of following the feeding recommendations on the package? Your pet is more likely to develop a weight problem if too much food is available. As many as 56 million American cats are overweight or obese, according to estimates from the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Gaining too much weight increases your cat's risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, urinary tract disease, joint issues, high blood pressure and arthritis.

Thirst. Have you been refilling your cat's water bowl more frequently lately? Several diseases and conditions, including diabetes and kidney or thyroid disease, increase your pet's thirst.

Other foods that shouldn't be shared with pets, including gravy, nuts, candy (or other sugary treats), raisins, and grapes. Eating raisins and grapes or foods that contain them could cause kidney failure and death in pets, according to Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
If your pet has periodontal disease, its gums may begin to pull away from the teeth, forming deep pockets around the teeth. Debris and bacteria collect in the pockets, which only worsens your pet's breath.
Cancer Treatment
Your pet may need surgery if a tumor is the reason for the bad breath. Tumors can benign (non-cancerous) or cancerous. If your pet has a cancerous tumor, radiation or chemotherapy may also be recommended, depending on the type and stage of the cancer.

Spaying and Neutering
Spaying (for females) and neutering (for males) prevent animals from having babies and offer a few health benefits. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, spaying provides protection against breast cancer and uterine infections, while neutering protects males from testicular cancer and enlarged prostate glands.

That being said, we are more than happy to provide genetic counseling and breeding management advice to breeders as well as advice on how to manage a kennel or cattery for the health and well being of your animals. As dogs and cats are distinct breeds, each breed has its positive and negative genetic attributes. At DRAH we will discuss with you any genetic disease your breed may be prone to produce, and to provide genetic testing (including DNA tests, blood tests, x-rays, etc.). We will discuss how to manage your breeding program to reduce the risk of producing genetic diseases and how to deal with them when they do occur. Ovulation timing, pregnancy monitoring including ultrasound and x-ray, scheduled and emergency c-sections, and many other services are offered at DRAH for the breeder. X-Ray
We are also dedicated to environmental awareness and make every effort to decrease our "carbon footprint". As such, we are a "paperless" practice, utilizing computer technology to maintain and store records, laboratory reports, etc. with daily backup for safety as well as enhanced programming to ensure security and privacy of confidential records. Our x-ray technology is based on computer digital radiography to eliminate the need for x-ray film, darkroom chemicals, and processing machinery. We are committed to recycling any waste paper that is generated, as well as aluminum, tin, and other recyclable materials. In addition, we are exploring the viability of solar panels for electrical energy and other energy saving techniques for our hospital.

Following graduation from Connecticut K-9 with a Groomer's license in 2013, she has spent the majority of her career continuing to better herself in all aspects of pet grooming and care. Amber loves to attend grooming seminars and strives for happy, healthy pets and clients. Her life has always included animals. As a rider of over 20 years, Amber spends her free time with her horse and loves to teach riding lessons to anyone who wants to learn. She is also very competitive, spending the majority of her weekends at barrel races or with her dog playing barn hunt or agility. She is pictured here with her beloved Boxer, Binx.

At DRAH we encourage routine annual physical examinations for all pets, as a part of a preventative and well-care program. We see a variety of pets including dogs and cats. Large animal species (horses, goats, sheep, cows, llamas, alpacas, etc.) are also seen by our affiliate, Coastal Valley Veterinary Services. It is recommended to have a yearly physical exam performed for your pet, and for those senior pets (dogs and cats over 8 years of age) a twice yearly exam is often important for detecting health problems as early as possible.
