The second way diabetes can cause vision loss is through the proliferation (growth) of new vessels. Laser therapy is used to decrease the body's tendency to grow new vessels in the eye. This helps reduce the chance of vision loss from bleeding, retinal detachment and glaucoma. It is accomplished in the office with the use of topical or regional anesthesia. Some experience a minor ache around the eye which can be treated easily with over the counter pain medications. Patients are asked to return in 4 to 6 weeks to evaluate the response to the laser therapy.

Ophthalmology
Dr. Tabassian received a Bachelor of Science and a Ph.D. with honors from George Washington University. He earned his M.D. with honors at the Medical College of Virginia. After an internship, Dr. Tabassian returned to the Medical College of Virginia for residency in Ophthalmology. A fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal diseases at the prestigious University of Iowa followed. Dr. Tabassian returned to Richmond in 1996 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Virginia. Since establishing the Retina Institute of Virginia, Dr. Tabassian has continued to be active in teaching at MCV.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of vision loss in people over age 65. Although it rarely causes total blindness, it can cause permanent loss of your central vision making it difficult to see near and far.
Laser Eye Surgery
Vitrectomy is an eye surgery that treats retinal and vitreous disorders. The retina is the light-sensing tissue at the back of the eye. The vitreous is the clear, gel-like substance that fills the middle of the eye. During a vitrectomy, the vitreous gel is removed and normally replaced by a saltwater solution.

He received his Bachelor of Science in Business from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He earned his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He then completed an internship in Internal Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia, where he continued his residency training in Ophthalmology. A fellowship in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery and Macular Diseases with J. Donald M. Gass, M.D. at Vanderbilt University followed.

We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of many conditions affecting the retina and vitreous. In order to help understand these problems and how we treat them,we have provided brief descriptions of each treatment we use within our practice. Ultrasound
A vitreous hemorrhage is blood in the central cavity of the eye. It occurs when the retina's new, abnormal blood vessels rupture and bleed into the vitreous humor. They are usually a result of leakage from abnormal and weak blood vessels associated with diabetic retinopathy. Other causes may include a buildup of pressure in the veins of the retina due to an occlusion, a tear in the retina, or rarely 'wet' macular degeneration. Depending on the size of the hemorrhage, you may see a few new, dark floaters or all of your vision could be blocked. If the vitreous blood doesn't clear within a reasonable amount of time, vitrectomy surgery may be recommended. Ultrasound may be used if the blood in the eye prevents your physican's view to the retina. Ultrasound uses sound waves to evaluate the retina tissue behind the blood to help determine the cause and guide therapeutic options.
