Gilbertie's

Tonight my husband and I went to Gilberties in Colchester. We have always enjoyed Gilberties. It is a great place to relax, sip your wine, drink your beer, and enjoy the food. We have recommended it to many people and brought friends to enjoy it. We love their bacon blue cheeseburger. Up until tonight it has always been awesome. After tonight, we will no longer go frequent Gilberties.

Tonight my husband order his burger black & blue and I ordered mine rare. Just like we did 2 weeks ago. Tonight our waitress told us that state law says they can not cook a black and blue burger. Since when? There is no such State Law in the state of Connecticut. North Carolina…yes. Connecticut…no. Then she told us that one of the chefs does not like to cook burgers rare. Well if you have a chef that does not want to cook what the customers want…FIRE HIM.

I was so looking forward to a good burger tonight and it was a great disappointment to me that I did not get my burger fix. But there are just too many other good restaurants that do cook rare burgers for us to waste time arguing with a waitress & cook (not a chef) on how we would like our burgers cooked. For starters there is the Dublin and the Governor’s Tavern in E. Hampton, Plan B Burger and Hanafin’s Pub in Glastonbury, Bobby Flay’s at Mohegan Sun. Some are more of a drive than others, but if you want a good burger these days, it is worth the drive.

To give the waitress credit…she did warn us. I thank her for that.

Good-bye Gilberties. We loved you once. We don’t love you any more.
