Dental Examination
The first sign of oral cancer is often a tiny white or red spot in the mouth, but the disease can be detected before a sore appears. At the Dental Depot, Dr. Ghering will look for suspicious lesions at each dental exam. He might recommend a visit to an oral pathologist as the next step.

Dental Sealants
It is very important for children and adolescents to take care of their teeth. Good adolescent oral health (including sealants) can prevent a variety of dental issues. Because of their many bumps and grooves, the chewing surfaces of children and adolescents' teeth are highly susceptible to cavities. Debris and the bacteria resulting from it may become lodged between the grooves of a teenager's tooth. These grooves (called pits and fissures) may be more problematic for some teenagers than for others.

As people become busy with their careers and family, their adult dental health is in danger of being ignored. Many adults had dental work when they were younger. It is important to remember that fillings and crowns do not last forever; they must be monitored at each six-month visit to the Dental Depot. If necessary, fillings (also called dental restorations) might be replaced. Replacing a filling would repair a damaged or decayed tooth, restoring it back to its normal shape, appearance and function. Restoration can prevent the loss of a tooth, since decay may spread and destroy the tooth.

DENTAL BRIDGE: Dental bridges serve to "bridge the gap" created by one or more missing teeth. A bridge is made up of two crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth/teeth in between. Dental bridges are supported by natural teeth or implants (see definition below).

Deep Cleaning
SCALING: Periodontal scaling includes the removal of plaque, calculus and stain from the crown and root surfaces of teeth. Scaling and root planing are often referred to as deep cleaning, and may be performed using a number of dental tools. These tools include ultrasonic instruments and hand instruments, such as periodontal scalers and curettes.

DENTURES: Dentures are prosthetic devices constructed to replace missing teeth. A denture is supported by surrounding soft and hard tissues of the oral cavity. Dentures can help patients by aiding in mastication (chewing ability), aesthetics, speaking ability, and self-esteem.

IMPLANTS: A dental implant is an artificial tooth root used to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth. A typical implant consists of a titanium screw with a roughened or smooth surface. Dental implants can be used to support a number of dental prostheses, including crowns, bridges or dentures (see definitions for these dental terms above).
