Dental Examination

X-rays
Prior to the surgery, the periodontal surgeon will generally prescribe an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory medication to treat the underlying infection. Panoramic X-rays will then be taken to enable the surgeon to plan the apicoectomy, which will be performed under local anesthesia.
Oral Cancer Screening
Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.

Preventive

Teeth Cleaning
If overly aggressive brushing techniques are eroding the gums, a softer toothbrush and a gentler brushing technique should be used. If poor oral hygiene is a problem, prophylaxis (professional dental cleaning) may be recommended to rid the gum pockets of debris and bacteria. In the case of a severe calculus (tartar) build-up, scaling and root planing will be performed to heal gingival inflammation and clean the teeth.
Fluoride Treatment
Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.

Sendy is one of our surgical assistants and has been in the dental field since 2012. She began her career assisting in general dentistry. Sendy attended the University of Illinois at Chicago and received her certificate in Coronal Polishing and Pit Fissure Sealant in 2014. Send is also a certified anesthesia assistant and works closely with the doctor in surgery. In her free time she enjoys exercising, remodeling her home, outdoor activities and travel abroad to experience new cultures.

The teeth are held firmly in place by strong roots that extend into the jawbone. Molars and premolars tend to have several roots, whereas the front incisors only have a single root. The end or tip of each root is termed the apex. The apex is where the nerves and blood vessels enter the tooth and aids in the delivery of blood to the crown (the part of the tooth you can see in your mouth).

Root Canal Treatment
There are generally two main reasons why a patient would need an extraction: (1) a tooth grows in impacted, or (2) a tooth becomes infected and cannot be saved by root canal procedure.
Apicoectomy
A root canal treatment refers to the cleaning of the canals and the removal of infected and inflamed tissue within the root. When the inflammation or infection persists after the root canal treatment, an apicoectomy may be required. An apicoectomy is essentially the removal of the apex (or root tip), followed by a filling procedure to seal the root from further infection. When left untreated, infected roots can damage other teeth, spread infection, and cause regression of the jawbone.

Gingivectomy and Gingivoplasty
Pocket reduction surgery (also known as gingivectomy, osseous surgery and flap surgery) is a collective term for a series of several different surgeries aimed at gaining access to the roots of the teeth in order to remove bacteria and tartar (calculus).
Periodontal Surgery
Wilckodontics or PAOO combines orthodontic treatment and periodontal surgery to facilitate the safe and rapid movement of teeth through the jawbone.
Deep Cleaning
Following these deep cleaning procedures, the gum pockets may be treated with antibiotics. This will soothe irritation and help the gum tissues to heal quickly.

Wearing your prosthesis or night guard – Partial dentures, flippers, full dentures, retainers, or night guards should not be used for at least 10 days following surgery. If there are any special circumstances, our practice will discuss those with you during your pre-operative consultation.

Periodontal gum surgery may be necessary to control infection and recover from gum disease. After treatment, we welcome patients back to monitor their response to care and provide follow-up treatment.
Osseous Surgery
Tooth Extractions
There are a number of reasons that your dentist might recommend a tooth extraction. Some dental patients suffer from tooth decay; others need to remove teeth hindering orthodontic treatment, whereas various patients simply need wisdom teeth removal. While a tooth extraction can be a serious dental procedure, aftercare is just as critical as the procedure itself. As the dental patient, it is important to understand that pain and the risk of infection can be lessened with proper care.
Ridge Augmentation
Ridge augmentation – Ridges in the bone can occur due to trauma, injury, birth defects, or severe periodontal disease. The bone graft is used to fill in the ridge and make the jawbone a uniform shape.
Bone Grafting
Autogenous bone graft – In this type of graft the bone is removed from elsewhere in the body and implanted in the mouth. Common donor sites for bone grafting include the iliac section of the pelvis, the chin and the posterior third molar areas of the jaw. If large amounts of bone need to be harvested, the hip or the shin bone (tibia) is generally used.

She started as a dental assistant in general dentistry and also worked as a receptionist for a while. Nicole graduated from Rock Valley College Dental Hygiene Program and is a member of the Windy City Seminar Hygiene Study Club. She loves being able to connect with her patients and get to know them. Nicole is a mom to a 1-year-old dachshund named Sophia. Nicole enjoys traveling, exploring new places, cooking, working out at the gym, and spending quality time with family and friends.
