I called them today to see if they are willing to negotiate to an actual Kelly Blue Book retail value on a couple of vehicles they have on their website, glad I called because the phone call was even a waste of time.



I was very up front with the person that answered the phone about how they were at least $1000 over the top Kelly Blue Book retail value of each car I looked at and would they be willing to negotiate to an appropriate price for something I was interested in buying. I am paying cash so I do not have to use their "bank" financing. The salesman tried to "explain" to me how naive I was that KBB (Kelly Blue Book) was really not that reliable and that they really under estimated the market value of vehicles. I told him that I was a former auto loan underwriter and that is not industry standard, he then proceeded to tell me that I should know that they do not use the KBB. (I also checked Edmunds who also came up with a similar value to KBB.) I said I know they use the "black book" value (which under values, not over values vehicles for trade or loan to value estimates for lenders). I then advised him that Economy Honda was actually on the low end of the retail value on KBB for a similar vehicle and to that he really did not have anything else to say.



I am a reasonable person and know that dealers will mark up prices for the purpose of negotiating so the customer feels like its a win for them and usually a win for both. However, this dealer will NEVER get my business and I will make sure I tell EVERYONE I can that they are full of it.



My advise go with a reputable dealer that will price their vehicles according to the market-not some random number they made up that is at least $1000 on the high end of retail value.
