Glaucoma
During your visit, your visual acuity will be tested in both eyes, pupils tested for reaction to light, eye movement assessed, peripheral vision checked; and eye pressure measured for glaucoma. The ophthalmic technicians will talk with you to get a more detailed medical and ocular history. Drops will then be placed in your eyes to dilate your pupils (it is suggested that you have someone drive you to this appointment).

Also, if you plan to have cataract surgery and you have had LASIK or other laser refractive surgery, provide your Eye M.D. with the vision correction prescription you had before LASIK, if possible. This information will help your Eye M.D. calculate the correct IOL prescription for you.

A thorough eye examination consists of a variety of standard tests designed to measure visual acuity and other vision faculties, as well as observe the health of the eye and check for common eye diseases. There is no pain or discomfort associated with an exam, and they typically take less than an hour.

Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is a common disease in which blood-sugar levels are chronically too high. The disease has many related complications, and several eye diseases among them. The most common eye complication of diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of adult blindness.

Ultrasound
The most common procedure used for removing cataracts is called phacoemulsification. A small incision is made in the side of the cornea (the front part of your eye). Your Eye M.D. inserts a tiny instrument through the incision that uses high-frequency ultrasound to break up the center of the cloudy lens and suction it out. The lens is removed in one piece, using a technique called extracapsular extraction.
