After being nickle and dimed about our trade-in to the point were we were about to walk out the door, our front tire goes flat the next day. After re-inflating it continues to lose air and we have to bring it to a garage due to being stranded. They showed us a defect in the tire where the side wall was bulging out the size of a golf ball. The garage mentioned that if we were on the highway we could have been killed as it would have been a total blowout. We then bring it to the Charlotte Volvo for repair and they send us a picture of another damage where someone had previously patched the tire. We then have the same sales manager for the next 2 months do the biggest finger pointing game we have ever seen. Calling and emailing that they are not responsible. Wow, 3 days after getting the car we had to have it towed and he is finger pointing. It shows what type of operation this is with no concern for our safety and the risk they put us in.

BEWARE OF BUYING A USED CAR AT THIS DEALERSHIP! Honesty is not their policy and neither is a fair deal. We test drove a Mazda 6 that looked great and had obviously been pristinely steam cleaned under the hood. Thank goodness a bulb was out on one of the front lights. We were offered a $50.00 credit towards our purchase to have this fixed on our own. We followed our instincts and had the car inspected by a professional shop just down the road and they found $2000 worth of issues that needed to be addressed. The "manager" of the dealership never showed the courtesy of meeting face to face with us, but did offer up this reassuring tidbit, "A leakage is different from a seepage." WHAT? No, that is a sales FAIL! Not to mention every bit of this should have been caught during the "detailed inspection" performed by their service department. Maybe it was and the management decided to just "shine it up" instead of fixing the issues or at least being honest and transparent about them. On a better note, the only reason this dealership even deserves 1 star is that the salesman was actually cordial and did talk to management on our behalf.

Beware of this service department

This posts reports an unscrupulous transaction – if not illegal behavior - I recently encountered with the service department at University Volvo in Charlotte, NC on June 27, 2013.

In short, the service department at University Volvo – Tonya Burleson and Greg Summers in particular - attempted to force me to purchase about $1000 of repairs before they would honor the replacement of my catalytic converter under the warranty – even though they confirmed my car qualified for replacement under the warranty.

To fulfill the warranty work, University Volvo wanted me to purchase other repairs that “could be” related to the issue – saying “they have no real way of knowing if they are contributory or not until they implement them”.

Not only did they want me to purchase unnecessary repairs, but they required me to drive the car over 75 - 100 miles (after the repairs) which may have pushed me out of the warranty period (see attached receipt). Tonya said there was nothing if that happened she could do but would certainly represent my case to Volvo.

The catalytic converter was subsequently replaced under warranty without any additional repairs or hassle by a different Volvo dealer (Volvo / Saab of Charlotte.

I wonder how many other unsuspecting customers have been extorted out of money by this dealership. I checked the yellow page reviews of this dealer’s service department. The reviews of the service department seem to be indicative of the experience I had – and the service manager T.J. (Tonya) Burleson in particular.

At one point, Tonya told me that she “only has problems with customers who are getting advice from 3rd party mechanics”... meaning the uninformed car owners. My goal now is to protect others.

I have had 2 Volvo's serviced at University Volvo for the past 5 years. They have always been prompt, courteous and professional in all interactions. I would highly recommend University Volvo for both service and sales.

Bought convertible about 1.5 years ago. First Volvo. Great price/process and great service since. The 5-year full service, including maintenance, is true -- only thing excluded so far has been tire rotatation. No attempts to gouge or add-on like some dealerships/garages. Purchase price negotiated by internet, phone and email, so when we arrived, no issues; best price on East Coast and only slightly above cost -- and not much more than used car. Particular kudos to AJ in the showroom and Jean-Paul in the service department. Only thing preventing 5-stars? ... Update that waiting room and ensure there is a coffee table or work space!

Although I do not have a Volvo...

Although I do not have a Volvo (yet) but that never stopped them from giving me the best service. Tonya, John Paul and Greg are absolutely wonderful to work with. I have watched each and everyone of these people be kind and attentive to not only me but others. I would definately recommend University Volvo to all. Thank you all for catering to me and my Ford until I purchase my Volvo. It will definately come from University Volvo.

I have had a couple of issues ...

I have had a couple of issues with University Volvo. Until about a year ago they have been very helpful. However, I never really had an issue that needed helping. Recently I required assistance from two of the mangers (service manager, Tonya and parts manager, Dwayne). Dwayne was very helpful and had great customer service skills. Unfortunately, I can not say the same about Tonya. Although she says all the right things, her tone is definitely not friendly and customer service is not a priority of hers. I did not feel she cared to maintain a customer relationship.

SERVICE DEPT NIGHTMARE

Service dept is unhelpful and rude! Beware go elsewhere..tanya the service manager is the worst. If you have any recall issues find another dealership. They often lie about what's wrong..what needs to be fixed..and what they have fixed. My car only has issues when I've had them look at it. Try bakers volvo or volvo on central ave affordable and consistent unlike university volvo! Good luck!

I am sorry for whatever you experienced at University Volvo. I would love to hear about it. Recalls are set by the manufacturer and not by dealers. If a vehicle is affected by a recall, the repair is covered at no expense to the owner of the vehicle.

Wish I didn't own a Volvo

I do love my Volvo for the safety factor but we have put so much money into it!! My car broke down yesterday and after having it towed to one mechanic, and then another for a second opinion, they BOTH told us it was the Fuel Pump. We realized that it was just replace (because of a recall) last May. Therefore, it was under warranty. We had it towed to University Volvo so they could replace it for free...so we thought. They called us and let us know that it was not the Fuel Pump (that would have been covered) but it's a sensor in the Fuel Tank and it will be over $500! We told them that two others had told us otherwise. They basically just disagreed - We said we were going to have it towed to another place and they said we'd have to first pay the $110 diagnostic fee! We never even were told about this in the first place!!! I am so frustrated but don't see any other way to fix it...now we've paid 2 diagnostic fees already...arg!! NEVER buying another Volvo!! Bad Customer Service...NOT 'VOLVO FOR LIFE' for me!

1 star only because zero stars is not an option

Terrible location. Pitful inventory. Service desk personnel act like you are bothering them when you try to give them your business. The owner is a disprespecful a-hole. Every aspect of this business is third rate (and I am being generous).

If Food Lion went into the auto dealership business this is what it would look like. Wait, that's probably too harsh on Food Lion.

Stay away from this Volvo Dealer

I have had mediocure service from this dealership until today. I just took my car in for 60 mile service and will not be back. They did not do everything requested to start. When my husband I picked up the car a light on the dash was still on related to the alarm system. We went back and spoke to the owner about why it wasnt taken care of as the light was on when it was brought in. He basically called us liars and insisted it had not been on when brought in(his technican told him that). Unreal! I will be getting a new Volvo this year but, wont be from this dealer!!

Service Dept.

I had been a customer since 1995. I bought 4 Volvo's from them because I was so happy with their service department. Last summer I brought my 2002 S80 to them for it's 60,000 mile service. Several things were not done and several things were done wrong or poorly. I called to tell them I was disappointed with the service but Tonya had excuses for all my complaints. I am sorry to say that I when I go to buy my next car, it won't be a Volvo. The service dept. is an important consideration for me when purchasing a new car.
