If a tooth is fractured, it can be repaired by re-affixing the broken piece, or using a realistic tooth-colored filling. However, if a significant portion of the tooth has broken off, a crown might be necessary to bring the tooth back to complete health and full functionality.

Dental Bonding
Dental Bonding – The fractured portion of the tooth is bound together, or partial replacement, with a white filling material. This is often a great option for a tooth with a minor chip.
Restorative Dentistry

Pulpotomy
Vital Pulpotomy – If the pulp has evidence of decay, yet the root is still viable and healthy, a vital pulpotomy can be performed. The decay and unhealthy pulp is removed, leaving the healthy pulp intact. A protective material fills the tooth, and it’s covered with a crown. While vital pulpotomy is typically used in children, it can also be used in an adult tooth that has not finished growing a full root. Although, when used in an adult tooth, it’s often temporary, until the root is fully grown.
Root Canal Treatment
Dr. Justin McAbee was born and raised in Charleston. He attended Bishop England High School and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University. He received his dental training as well as his endodontic specialty training at the Medical University of South Carolina. While practicing, he went on to complete the board certification process in endodontics and is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics.
Apicoectomy
Generally, a root canal is all that is needed to save teeth with injured pulp from extraction. Occasionally, this non-surgical procedure will not be sufficient to heal the tooth and your endodontist will recommend surgery. Endodontic surgery can be used to locate fractures or hidden canals that do not appear on x-rays but still manifest pain in the tooth. Damaged root surfaces or the surrounding bone may also be treated with this procedure. The most common surgery used to save damaged teeth is an apicoectomy or root-end resection.

Dentures
Extraction – If there is a vertical fracture, there isn’t much you can do to save the tooth. The doctor will recommend that the tooth be extracted. After the extraction, you could have an implant, bridge, or partial denture to replace the tooth.

Unfortunately, tooth extraction is the only other viable option. And, that would require replacing the void with a bridge, implant, or a removable partial denture. Without having the tooth replaced, the inability to chew properly could lead to other problems, such as headaches. Replacing the tooth would also help to avoid shifting of the other teeth. In addition, going this route would also be more time consuming and costly than retreatment of the natural tooth.

He earned a bachelor of science in Business Administration from The Citadel and received his dental training from the Medical University of South Carolina where he was a four-year Army scholarship recipient. Upon entering active duty, Dr. Morris was selected to attend the 2-Year Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Womack Army Medical Center, Fort Bragg, NC. He was assigned as Chief of Restorative Dentistry at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, GA where he finished his active duty commitment and was selected for the Advanced Education in Endodontics at the Medical College of Georgia. He is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics, a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of General Dentistry, and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry.
