Labor and Delivery
Some people are born with a hernia (congenital) and others develop problems due to trigger events such as surgeries, trauma or childbirth. Oftentimes, sneezing, coughing, lifting or other exertion can exacerbate the condition. Obesity also has a significant effect on worsening a hernia because of internal pressure on the abdominal wall. Studies show that weight reduction prior to hernia repair improves longterm outcomes and helps to reduce one’s recurrence rate and incidence of infection.

Cancer Care
Both of our general surgeons belong to the America Society of Breast Surgeons, and Dr. Basa is one of the first and only Austin-area physician to be certified in Breast Ultrasound by the American Society of Breast Surgeons. She is dedicated to offer her patients comprehensive breast cancer care offering ultrasound guided core biopsies in the office for quicker diagnosis to bring her patients to treatment quicker.

Ultrasound
The first and currently the only breast surgeon in Austin and the surrounding areas to be certified in Breast Ultrasound.
MRI
Dr. Basa added that women who are high risk for breast cancer may need an annual MRI and mammogram. She reiterated the red flag factors that physicians consider to be significant as women plan for breast cancer screening.
Radiology
Breast masses and uses the latest in ultrasound imaging technology. She is able to perform ultrasound guided breast cyst aspiration and small mass removals in the office by using the Terason Ultrasound Imaging System. This saves our patient’s time and resources by having their ultrasound done by the surgeon, in the surgeons office. Many patients can get the necessary biopsy, cyst aspiration or removal of a mass during the same visit without being referred out to a radiology facility and then waiting for the results to come back.
X-Rays
Mammography
In her 30s, a woman should start annual mammography when she has a family history of breast cancer, carries the BRCA gene or has other factors that put her at higher risk for breast cancer. (see below)
Computed Tomography
According to the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, more than 600,000 Americans have colon surgery each year. Our Cedar Park surgeons determine the necessity for colon surgery based on your referring physician’s notes and data drawn from diagnostic tools, including colonoscopy, a barium enema (an x-ray of liquid progressing through the intestines) or an abdominal CT scan.
Chemotherapy
Women with early-stage breast cancer, with evidence of cancer present in only one site, a tumor under 4 cm and tissue that is free of cancer cells (referred to as negative or clear margins), benefit from a less invasive approach. Dr. Basa will explain what she considers to be clear margins, and how she prepares the breast for post-surgical radiation or chemotherapy followed by radiation.
Radiation Therapy
Partial breast irradiation allows women with early breast cancer to receive focused radiation over 5 days compared to the typical 6 weeks of radiation therapy. This speeds up the return to normal life activities. These treatment devices are known as Brachytherapy or internally-delivered radiation and is a technique that spares healthy tissue and treats only the tissue around your tumor cavity.

General Surgery
Alan Abando, M.D., graduated cum laude from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He earned his medical degree with alpha omega alpha honors from Chicago’s Rush Medical College and completed his general surgery residency at Huntington Memorial Hospital, which is affiliated with the University of Southern California (USC).
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Your breast surgeon completed fellowship training in minimally invasive surgery at UCLA and is recognized as one of the Southwest’s most proficient breast surgeons.
Cyst Removal
Dr. Basa, a USC and UCLA trained general surgeon, performs mastectomy and lumpectomy breast surgery, and is able to offer in-office ultrasound-guided cyst removal and biopsy so that patients do not have to schedule a follow-up appointment at a radiology clinic.
