        In July 1952 Carlsbad, Calif., became an incorporated city and hired its first chief of police. The chief was the only member of the department and had a desk at the State Parks and Recreations Department. The Carlsbad Police Department has grown to a total of nearly 150 personnel that includes more than 100 sworn officers and less than 40 non-sworn employees. The department provides a number of services to the residents of the city, such as traffic safety and enforcement, street and bicycle patrol, gang suppression, community-oriented policing, a variety of crime prevention services, tactical team, off-road law enforcement, family services, juvenile services, domestic violence investigation and prevention and child abuse investigation.         As a Sheriff Dept Volunteer, I have met a few of these officers and am impressed with the level of professionalism they have.
        They have helped us out on some events and are among the best in the entire county and country.
        Always a pleasure to meet all the men and women in this department.
