Primary Care
A gastroenterologist has had an average of 12-15 years of education and training beyond high school, with the last 2-3 years spent acquiring special knowledge and skills in gastroenterology. He or she functions primarily as a consultant to other physicians; but in some special diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, he might assume primary care of the patient or become his principal physician.
Colonoscopy
You will be sedated for your colonoscopy and will not feel anything. Some patients do experience some discomfort after the procedure as the physician needs to introduce air into your colon to see it properly. It is important to release the air to avoid gas pains.
Electrocardiogram

Internal Medicine
If so, did you perform at least 140 colonoscopies during your training? Our physicians are Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. They have been through a GI fellowship and have completed the required amount of procedure during their fellowship.
Gastroenterology
Gastroenterology covers disorders of the entire gastrointestinal tract, which includes the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small bowel, and colon, as well as diseases of the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas.
Colon Cancer
You should schedule your screening colonoscopy between the ages of 45 and 50 dependent on your insurance coverage. If you have a family history of colon cancer, your screening colonoscopy might need to be completed earlier. Discuss this with your primary care physician or GI physician for a recommendation as to when the nest time would be for your screening.
