Mitchell Electric Corporation a nonprofit consumer-owned electric cooperative that supplies energy and energy related services to more than 25,000 customers in Southwest Georgia. Organized and incorporated in 1937 to supply electricity to people that investor-owned utilities refused to serve, Mitchell Electric is a locally owned and operated cooperative. The corporation is headquartered in Camilla, Ga., with branch offices in Albany and Sylvester. The majority of distribution lines are in Baker, Dougherty, Mitchell, and Worth counties. The cooperative also serves parts of Miller, Early, Decatur, Turner, Calhoun, Lee, Colquitt and Grady counties. . Oglethorpe Power Corporation, established in 1975, provides electricity to 39 of the 42 electric cooperatives in Georgia. It is one of the largest generation and transmission cooperatives in the country. Since the National Energy Act of 1992, OPC has been restructured, allowing Mitchell EMC and other EMC s to purchase some of its wholesale power from other suppliers.
