Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Kalf lives in Jefferson, MD. She graduated from Tuskegee University, School of Veterinary Medicine in 2005 and spent her first year of practice performing a rotating medical, surgical, and anesthesia internship at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, KY. To further her education to become a specialist, she then performed a three year residency in large animal internal medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kalf was granted Diplomate status by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal) in 2009, and later began practicing on small animals as well. Although Dr. Kalf enjoys all aspects of veterinary medicine, some of her special interests include gastroenterology, neurology, ophthalmology, and preventative medicine. Outside of work, she loves spending time with her boyfriend, Rob, and their two children. She also enjoys taking care of the sheep they raise, going to the beach, watching Kentucky basketball, and the New England Patriots.

Sometimes the dog will not show any clinical signs if they have just been infected by a mosquito. Dogs that have been infected for a long time will develop a cough, have a reduced appetite, fatigue, and even weight loss.

If your pet is not currently on a heartworm preventative, we highly recommend that you bring your dog in to get a quick and easy heartworm test to be sure your dog is negative before starting your monthly heartworm prevention.

The two treatments are stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection therapy. Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
A wide variety of conditions and health challenges can benefit from laser therapy. Soft tissue injuries including: tendonitis/otis, sprains, strains, back and neck pain, soft tissue knee conditions, muscle spasms, dermalogical skin conditions, and shoulder pain. Laser therapy can also benefit neurologic (spinal and nervous system) injury and pain, degenerative conditions such as osteo and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as post-operatively for cats and dogs after almost all surgeries.

“ I had such a thorough, patient experience yesterday with my Hunny...an almost 3 yr patient here. She had a skin thing, itching, and I am in between clients right now and was concerned about the bill. Not only did the tech and doc take so much time with me explaining what everything would cost...everything I could wait on, and adding it all up for me so patiently... They also fixed Hunny up so good, as she even had a little ear infection. The doc went on to see my nervousness at cleaning my dogs ears, and even got out a cross section model of a dogs ear canal for reassurance I wouldn’t go in too far. They are always so thorough and nice with Hunny and her mom:))) And I always get in right away. Really love all the vets and techs there. So does my dog!

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
Stem cell therapy has been used in veterinary medicine to help pets since 2004. The therapy uses an animal’s own stem cells, obtained through a minimally invasive surgery, to help reduce inflammation and pain in arthritic joints, with relief provided by procedure lasting between 1-4 years. Jefferson Veterinary Hospital will focus on using stem cell therapy to help manage pain and mobility problems caused by osteoarthritis and other joint related issues. It is an outpatient treatment that can all be performed on the same day in Jefferson Veterinary Hospital, and does not require an overnight stay in the hospital.

“ Our Pomeranian Sophie had kidney failure and was being treated at Jefferson Veterinary Hospital. The care givers at the hospital treated Sophie as if she belonged to them. Dr Kalf and Dr Ahalt both called on Sophie to follow up on her. Like humans our fury love ones can’t live forever. Dr. Ahalt showed so much compassion to Sophie, my wife and I when it was time for Sophie to go. Although Sophie is no longer with us in person she will always live in our hearts.
Cancer Treatment
It is always difficult to learn that your pet has cancer. Veterinarian Dr. Ahalt and three of his sons are survivors of childhood cancer, which has made oncology an area that he is incredibly passionate about. We hate cancer. Jefferson Veterinary Hospital provides both the surgical and medical treatment of cancer. These treatments are not undertaken lightly, and the best interests of your pet is constantly considered with you throughout all stages of the process. Dr. Ahalt has had considerable success with extending the life and most importantly the quality of life, of client's pets with both the surgical removal of cancerous growths and chemotherapy.

Microchipping your cat or dog is a simple procedure with an overwhelming benefit of your pet being returned to you quickly if they get out and are found by a person who takes them to a local veterinarian or animal shelter. Your veterinarian can place the microchip at Jefferson Veterinary Hospital. The microchip, which is the size of a grain of rice, is injected under your pets’ skin between the shoulder blades. The microchip is a permanent form of identification for your pet. When the microchip is scanned, there is a unique ID code that can identify your pet’s information.
