“I have been a patient of Dr. Phan’s since high school (nearly 10 years) and highly recommend him! I was born with a unilateral cleft lip and palate and have used Dr. Phan for a variety of dental needs from mouth guards to veneers. He is a perfectionist and very personable, which is key!Since I have a cleft, one side of my face isn’t as full as the other and Dr. Phan was able to “build up” the left two front teeth to match the right side almost identically. As a teenager, I was extremely nervous about having two of my front teeth shaved down to almost nothing and apprehensive of how veneers might look. Dr. Phan put me right at ease and I came out looking stunning, if I do say so myself! I still looked like me but there was a wonderful difference in the shape and quality of the two teeth. I had no idea how such a slight change would make such a difference. I really appreciated the attention to detail and Dr. Phan’s patience throughout the whole process.
Crowns
Historically replacing a missing tooth or teeth included the fabrication of a bridge. To replace a missing tooth with a bridge, at least one tooth on either side of the space created by the missing tooth must be prepared for a crown. Then a false tooth (known as a pontic) is joined to the crowns, and the entire bridge is cemented to the prepared teeth. A bridge is not a removable appliance like a denture and special aids are available to keep it clean.

Root Canal Treatment
A crown is made of a variety of materials (all metal, porcelain fused to metal or all porcelain) and covers a tooth that exhibits moderate to severe destruction such as a broken tooth, extensive wear, recurrent decay around a large filling or after a root canal. A crown, which is also known as a cap, covers a tooth and restores normal function while providing you with the strength, beauty, translucency and feel of a natural tooth. Your prosthodontist can help determine the correct crown for your specific needs.

Dentures
Complete or full dentures replace all the teeth in an arch (upper or lower). These dentures rest over the gums and jawbone. Full or complete dentures are more stable and retention is improved, if they are supported by dental implants (see “What is a Dental Implant”). Partial dentures replace some of the teeth, but not all of them. They rest on the gums, similar to the complete denture, but they also attach to the some of the remaining teeth with metal clasps.

Once teeth are extracted optimum oral health is compromised. The placement of a dental implant allows for replacement of missing teeth in a way that is similar to natural teeth and the ultimate improvement of oral health.

Teeth Whitening
Although most people are happy with their smile they wish to brighten and whiten their teeth. Many products are now available to accomplish this. These include whitening strips sold in most pharmacies, custom fabricated trays with a bleaching gel used at home or bleaching in a dental office using UV light as the catalyst. There are limitations to all whitening products. Your prosthodontist will be happy to help you determine the best teeth whitening procedures for your specific needs/goals.
