Dental Care
Examining your pet’s teeth and mouth is an important part of preventing dental disease. One of the most common health concerns in pets is dental disease. Very young animals, such as kittens and puppies, also need to be checked to ensure they are developing an appropriate bite and that they are losing their baby teeth at the right time. Periodontal Disease Treatment
Imagine what would happen if humans didn’t routinely care for their teeth, in-between dental cleanings! The same basics of dental care are true for your pet. Without routine care, your pet could suffer from increasingly serious stages of periodontal disease.

Laboratory Services
A complete physical includes any vaccines needed, a heartworm test, parasite screening, and should include a full blood workup. A full chemistry panel and complete blood count can identify the presence of underlying diseases. These tests help create a baseline should your pet become ill between routine examinations. Additionally, blood work is necessary if your veterinarian recommends any procedure that requires anesthesia. These procedures can include a dental cleaning, removal of skin masses, or certain testing procedure.
X-Ray
When we ultrasound the heart, we look at the size and function of the heart. Sometimes we obtain a baseline when a murmur is first heard, or as a clearance for anesthesia. In patients with clinical signs of coughing or difficulty breathing, we are looking for evidence of primary heart disease as a cause of the clinical signs and to rule in/out the possibility of heart failure. Most often, I will request a chest X-ray at the time of the exam to help evaluate the lungs. A blood pressure is also useful in many of these patients. Young puppies and kittens that are diagnosed with murmurs will be advised by your veterinarian to have an echocardiogram to see if there is a congenital abnormality especially before anesthesia for spay or neuter and to evaluate if your pet is a candidate for a corrective procedure if indicated.

Senior Pet Care
Kate enjoys working at BVH because of the sincere affection the staff has for its four-legged patients. “Aside from our hospital being a beautiful state of the art facility, everyone’s attitude is very friendly and helpful. Our staff truly cares for each pet that walks through our doors,” Kate says. She especially enjoys creating “works of art” out of scruffy fur and taking special care of senior pets.
