Cataracts
Dr. Pokeza is a board-certified comprehensive ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained cornea specialist. She specializes in performing small incision cataract surgery, corneal transplantation and management of comprehensive and corneal eye disease. She is highly experienced in advanced and complex techniques in cataract surgery and the use of multifocal and premium intraocular lenses. Dr. Pokeza also performs state-of-the-art corneal surgeries, such as full-thickness corneal transplantation and partial thickness endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK/DMEK).
Cataract Surgery
Our surgeons specialize in micro-incision surgery, necessitating only very small incisions and usually no sutures. Through the tiny incision, a microsurgical ultrasonic probe is inserted, which gently fragments the cloudy lens and suctions out the pieces. This process is called “phacoemulsification” and it has truly revolutionized the field of cataract surgery.
Eye Exam
A contact lens is considered a medical device and is a prescription item, just like medicines. Your contact lens prescription is valid for one year. Once it expires, you will be required to have an eye exam before more contact lenses will be prescribed or dispensed. This is done for your protection, to insure the health of your eyes. Even when your eyes and contact lenses feel good to you, there can be microscopic problems that may threaten your vision.

Diabetic retinopathy. This disease is a leading cause of blindness in American adults. It is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina. In some people with diabetic retinopathy, retinal blood vessels may swell and leak fluid. In other people, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. These changes may result in vision loss or blindness.

Ultrasound
Optical coherence tomography (OCT). You have probably heard of ultrasound, which uses sound waves to capture images of living tissues. OCT is similar except that it uses light waves, and can achieve very high-resolution images of any tissues that can be penetrated by light—such as the eyes. After your eyes are dilated, you’ll be asked to place your head on a chin rest and hold still for several seconds while the images are obtained. The light beam is painless.
