Dental Care
Dental health is a very important component of overall health and quality of life. We are able to provide services for routine dental cleaning, as well as more extensive care for extractions and tumor removals.
Vaccination

Recently discharged off active service, living in a tiny studio, and bored off my rockers, I adopted a young male Golden Retriever from the local animal shelter as a companion animal. There was no background on post-adolescent Remo except that he had been found wandering the parking lot of a local mall, but one thing was certain from his wild behavior; he had received little, if any, obedience training in his past. After borrowing a dog training manual from the public library, Remo and I began the process of reeling in his youthful exuberance at a nearby park. Every day, we would Forest Gump our way through the exercises outlined in the book.

Comprehensive Examination
Harlow was a 3-year-old spayed female dog, and one of the explosive detection candidates in the current mine detection dog handler course. There was nothing else going on that morning, and I did a full physical examination along with complete bloodwork in order to find a medical reason for her degrading performance. Her vitals were normal, and I did not detect any abnormalities on her physical exam. Her bloodwork was completely clean. “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with this dog,” I said, and the handler dejectedly headed up back the hill to the training area with his dog in tow.

Periodontal Disease Treatment
Imagine what would happen to your mouth if you didn’t brush your teeth or visit the dentist for 10 years. Do terrible breath, sore gums, and painful, damaged teeth come to mind? Unfortunately for our dogs and cats, the harmful consequences of inadequate dental hygiene are similar to those suffered by humans. While some wear and tear on your pet’s teeth will occur naturally with age, periodontal disease is the real culprit in declining oral health and is often invisible because much of it occurs below the gum line. If periodontal disease remains untreated, it can cause problems beyond an unhealthy mouth. The spread of dental-disease-causing bacteria from the mouth can give rise to potentially damaging infections in other areas of the body, including organ tissues. In order to effectively address periodontal disease, a pet should receive a thorough mouth evaluation and cleaning under general anesthesia, at which time the extractions of any damaged or diseased teeth can be safely performed. Attempting a dental procedure without the use of anesthesia does not allow for a thorough exam or for cleaning below the gum line where most problems occur. It also increases your pet’s stress level, as well as the risk of accidental injury to the patient and the veterinary staff. In order to help lower your pet’s risk of periodontal disease, visit your veterinarian regularly for evaluations of your dog or cat’s oral health. Dr. Jessica Bienapfl graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from Montana State University in 2002. She received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Minnesota in 2008. She has an interest in internal medicine, soft tissue surgery and particularly in acupuncture, having obtained her Veterinary Acupuncture Certification from the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) in 2009. Dr. Bienapfl and her husband have a sprightful Lab named Elsie and two cats named Haast and Penny. In her spare time, she enjoys a wide variety of outdoor activities including gardening, skiing, hiking, camping and mountain biking.

Dental Radiology
More than 85% of dogs and cats greater than 4 years of age have periodontal disease. With 60% of periodontal disease lying below the gum line, gross visual examinations may not detect important underlying issues. Part of our oral assessment of patients hospitalized for dental cleanings under anesthesia includes digital dental radiology. Not only are dental radiographs recommended for all teeth prior to extraction but they also give us the ability to find other abnormalities. Other possible findings include bone loss of the mandible and/or maxilla, tooth root abscesses, feline resorptive lesions, progression of oral neoplasia, retained tooth roots and anatomical abnormalities. The importance of dental radiology with quick digital results is paramount.

We offer HomeAgain ISO (internationally readable) microchips for your pet's protection. For a one-time fee, we insert the chip and register your pet. Your pet will be in HomeAgain's database for its lifetime; no other fees are required.

Dog Training
When I was a kid, our family dog was a retriever mix named, Dee. Dee never received any training and was pretty rambunctious as a year-old adolescent. She had no manners, and one of her annoying behaviors was jumping up on people in greeting. I happened to be flipping through a random magazine one day, and noticed an article on dog training, with a specific section on correcting unwanted jumping. This particular article recommended correcting the behavior by bending down and petting the dog on the head before she jumped. A little intrigued, I put Dee outside, then walked through the door and pet her on the head before she could jump. I repeated the drill for 10 minutes, after which I lost interest until the next day, when I ran another 10-minute session.
