Patients choose surgeons in various ways: by word of mouth, from knowing others who have been treated by a particular surgeon, by researching their options, through recommendations of anesthesiologists and nurses, and other health care professionals familiar with a surgeon, reading on-line reviews, and by primary care physician (PCP) referral, to name a few. Although historically a referral from your PCP – who one assumed was very familiar with the surgeon’s character, experience, abilities, and outcomes – was an excellent source of referral (and in many cases may still be), restrictive insurance networks and pressures on doctors to refer within a specific network has at times affected this source. Spine surgery is rarely an emergency, or essential, and the decision to proceed with surgery, as well as the choice of surgeon, are yours to make.
Emergency Care
Following his spine surgery fellowship he returned to a faculty position at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Shortly thereafter, as Chief of the Orthopedic Spine Service, Dr. Pedlow established the first Orthopedic Spine Center at MGH. This was established by bringing in specialists from the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants to work with the surgeons in the evaluation and treatment of all adult spine patients. In collaboration with MGH Neurosurgical services, he also established the first Emergency Room and In-Patient Spine On Call system at MGH. Dr. Pedlow is responsible for many of the improvements in OR equipment and technology that have occurred over his last 18 years at MGH as related to orthopedic spine surgery, and the offering to patients many of the advances in spine surgical techniques that have occurred over this period. He was also integral in the creation and subsequent development of the Newton-Wellesley Spine Center, at its inception a collaboration between Newton-Wellesley Hospital and the MGH

Sciatica
Sciatica is a term for symptoms caused by compression of any of the spinal nerves in the lower back causing pain to radiate down the legs and even cause tingling or numbness in the toes and feet.
Pinched Nerve
As specialists in the spine, we provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary treatment for all types of back and neck problems. Patients who come to our office often are experiencing back pain, neck pain, leg pain, and/or muscle spasms that may be related to a degenerative or traumatic condition, an injury, or a deformity. We diagnose and treat common problems such as a pinched nerve (sciatica), muscle strains, and herniated discs (slipped discs), but we also have advanced training to provide leading-edge treatments for complex conditions, including stenosis, scoliosis, and anterior lumbar interbody fusion.
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Although our current practice focuses on degenerative conditions of the cervical and lumbar spine, minimally invasive surgery, and injured workers, as a spine surgeon working at a tertiary care referral center and Level 1 Trauma Center for the past 20 years, Dr. Pedlow brings a vast amount of experience to the care of his patients gained from treating the most complex and challenging of spine conditions.
Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Pedlow is a board-certified, fellowship-trained spine surgeon, specializing in the surgical treatment of disorders of the adult spine. He is a member of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and New England Baptist Hospital, and an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a member of the North American Spine Society, the International College of Surgeons, and the Irish-American Orthopaedic Society. He is the former and was the first Chief of the Orthopaedic Spine Service at the Massachusetts General Hospital, a position he held until establishing the premier Orthopaedic Spine Surgery private practice in downtown Boston.
Neurosurgery
Dr. Frank X. Pedlow is a very experienced orthopedic surgeon, and is one of the only spine surgeons in New England that has received training in both the Neurosurgical and Orthopaedic principles and techniques of spine surgery. His successful career in medicine began in 1986, when he graduated from New York Medical College. Upon receiving his Medical Degree, he completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery in the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Residency Program, and served as Chief Resident at Massachusetts General Hospital. He then undertook his Spinal Surgery fellowship at Emory University Spine Center. Dr. Pedlow previously served as a Neurosurgery Fellow at LIJ Medical Center, and also spent time training internationally in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Montreal in Canada, the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital in England, and the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopedic Hospital in England.

When surgery is needed, Dr. Pedlow utilizes established, safe, and effective surgical treatment methods, often employing the latest techniques and advanced technologies to minimize the invasiveness of surgery.
