When the pulp of your tooth becomes inflamed or infected it requires endodontic treatment.Â The cause of the infection or inflammation can come from previous dental procedures on the tooth, deep decay or a crack or chip in the tooth.Â Also, trauma to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if the tooth has no visible cracks or chips.Â If you leave your tooth untreated, it may cause discomfort or lead to an abscess. Visible signs may be discoloration of the tooth and swelling or tenderness in the gum area. Further signs may be pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold or no symptoms at all.Â After removing the inflamed or infected pulp, the doctor cleans and shapes the canals and fills and seals the space.Â You will then return to your dentist for the final restoration of the tooth, which may include a crown or other restoration.Â Â Your tooth may be sensitive for several days following the procedure.Â We recommend taking over-the-counter or prescription medications.Â The tooth may feel slightly abnormal from your other teeth for a time after the endodontic treatment.Â If severe discomfort lasts more than a few days, call us.

Apicoectomy
The most common surgical procedure is called an Apicoectomy.Â An Apicoectomy is needed if all nonsurgical methods have failed and the inflammation or infection continues in the bony area at the end of the tooth.Â This surgery is performed with a local anesthetic and the doctor will give you specific postoperative instructions.

Dentures
Usually the alternative to surgery is extraction of the problem tooth.Â After the extraction you will need to replace the extracted tooth with an implant, removable partial denture or bridge to restore chewing area and prevent other teeth from shifting.Â We would be happy to discuss these options with you and your dentist if an extraction is required.

Dental Implants
Treatment.Â In most cases it is less expensive to have endodontic treatment and dental restoration than the alternative of having the tooth extracted. Upon extraction the tooth will need to be replaced with a bridge or implant to restore its function of chewing and keep adjacent teeth from shifting.Â Bridges and implants tend to be costly alternatives to endodontic treatment.

Dr. Chapman was raised in Idaho Falls, ID and is proud to call himself an Idaho native. He received his Bachelor of Science from Idaho State University where he attended on athletic and academic scholarships. Dr. Chapman graduated from Creighton University School of Dentistry in 1998 with honors. He went on to complete his specialty training in endodontics at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. Dr. Chapman is committed to remain on the cutting edge of endodontics and he takes several hours of continuing education courses each year. He is an associate clinical professor at Creighton University School of Dentistry where he lectures to senior dental students. Dr. Chapman is also an adjunct faculty member at Idaho State University-Boise campus where he teaches new dentists in the discipline of endodontics at the ISU Advanced Education in General Dentistry Residency.
