Swedish Massage
Swedish Massage is by far the most common method which is universally taught to all massage therapists. Deep Tissue Massage
Trigger Point Massage is a focused technique that applies constant deep pressure to areas in the muscle that have trigger points. Trigger points are the lumps in the muscles you feel during a massage. The place that hurts with pressure during a massage but at the same time is a good hurt. These are areas in the muscle where the muscle is being overworked and not efficiently eliminating toxins related to sugar metabolism. These toxins are an irritant to the muscle and cause the nearby muscle fibers to contract. This reactive muscle contraction starts a vicious cycle creating more toxins and more irritation. Trigger Point Massage uses pressure directly over the trigger point sustained. The treatment consists of this sustained pressing on a trigger point followed by flowing techniques such as a Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage. The goal is to move the toxins out of the specific points in the muscles and break up the vicious cycle.
Sports Massage
A Sports Massage would best be described as targeting muscles around a dysfunctional joint. Usually, injuries related to sports are the area of Sports Massage therapists. Many of the techniques used would be like a Deep Tissue Massage with extra focus on the tendons which are the sites muscles attach to bones. Sports therapists will use techniques such as cross friction massage which is when massage is not done in the direction parallel with the muscle/tendon fibers but instead they will go perpendicular to the fibers. The idea is to break up adhesions between the muscle fibers or the fibers of a tendon. This is very useful in chronic sports injuries. A Sports Massage would also involve stretching of tight muscles.

The benefits of massage therapy depend on the type of technique used for the condition being treated. Many people have gotten a massage before – most of them in a spa setting, including s Swedish massage with add-ons such as aromatherapy massage, hot stone, or reflexology massage. Many times, a Swedish Massage is given with some of the deeper aspects of a massage included. In a clinical setting such as a professional massage clinic or a Chiropractic Office, you may experience Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue Massage, Rolfing, Sports Massage, Thai Massage, Prenatal Massage, Chinese Cupping or Trigger Point Massage. When deciding what you need it is important to understand different techniques and what a new therapist you may visit specializes in. In my experience, most therapists will combine multiple techniques to their sessions to best treat what someone is coming to them for. In other cases, such as Rolfing for example this is a method of massage that has a progression of sessions you go through to make a full body correction.
Thai Massage
A Thai Massage is different from all the above techniques because it is not your classic remove your clothes get under the sheets on a massage table and a therapist uses lotions massaging a muscle by hand. During a Thai Massage, you wear loose-fitted clothing and lay on a mat. Developed in India it is sometimes referred to as assisted yoga massage. During a session, the therapist will be on the floor with you pulling, stretching, and rocking your body in different positions. The ultimate goal is improving energy flow in the body but most noticeably you will feel looser, relaxed, and energized after a session.

Near Infrared, Middle Infrared and part of Far Infrared exhibit photomodulation effects in the tissues. Remember photomodulation is the effect exhibited at the mitochondrial level of the cell which is responsible for the therapeutic effects of light therapy. The only difference between wavelengths is depth of penetration. It would make sense that the longer the wavelength the deeper the tissue penetration but this is not true. As the graphic below will show as the wavelength gets longer in the near infrared spectrum we get a peak of penetration. As the wavelength gets longer in the Middle Infrared and the Far Infrared range the depth of penetration decreases. The reason for this is water has an absorbance at 970 Nanometer wavelengths. At this wavelength the electrons of a water molecule get excited and the molecules begin moving faster creating heat. This is the physics behind a microwave oven. This is why infrared saunas heat up our skin just as sunlight heats us up.

Chiropractic Adjustments
At Aiello Family Chiropractic, we offer experienced care encompassing the best alternative therapies as well as neurologic based adjustment techniques. Dr. Aiello uses Diversified Chiropractic Techniques and gentle options such as Activator, Spinal Decompression, and Sacral Occipital Techniques. We understand that each patient has needs and limitations that require a unique approach to their care. We are not a "one treatment fits all" type of approach. We spend time with each patient during treatments. Every visit will take 20-30 minutes with the doctor for a Chiropractic adjustment, massage, and stretching.
Spinal Adjustments
The short answer is all the above. If a chiropractor is skilled at delivering a spinal adjustment to the area needed the body will heal naturally. The only difference is the skill of the practitioner and how well they can detect what is causing the problem and then apply proper spinal manipulation. My philosophy incorporates spinal manipulation to address nervous system imbalance, massage therapy to restore muscle balance, and red light therapy to decrease inflammation and speed healing. I have been trained in neurologic-based theory of Chiropractic and found great success practicing the techniques associated with this philosophy. I believe that results are the most important factor and if care is delivered correctly, you do not need to see a chiropractor three times per week for months on end. Results should be attained within a four-to-six-visit timeframe for the average patient. If it is taking longer then we are not dealing purely with restricted segments in the spine or subluxations impinging nerves. In these cases, we are usually dealing with herniated discs, chronic tendonitis/bursitis, or degenerative spinal stenosis. Chiropractors still have the ability to address these issues also but adjunct therapies such as decompression and other physical modalities are incorporated into manipulative care.

Subluxation
The first established chiropractic philosophy and technique started in the United States in 1895 by D.D. Palmer. He theorized that the vertebra would slightly dislocate and cause disharmony of nerve tone. This nerve tone was described by him as an interruption in the vibration of the nerves that allow nerves to communicate between the brain and all parts of the body. I won’t run on about all the twists and turns related to the original theory, but the modern theory has moved away from the tone of the nerves to the impingement of the nerves. This theory is the Subluxation Theory in chiropractic which is based on spinal misalignments or subluxations causing mechanical nerve impingements. These impingements can obviously result in pain throughout the body depending on the location in the spine where subluxations are located but they are also believed to have effects on organ function. A central part of this theory is a subluxation exists because either a dysfunctional organ or body part is sending an overload of signals to the spine causing it to subluxate. Trauma can also cause a subluxation. It is believed that when the subluxation is corrected nerve interference is removed and the body part or organ returns to normal function. You know if you are working with a chiropractor practicing this philosophy because they usually do X-rays to assess your spinal alignment and only perform an adjustment during the treatment.
Manipulation Therapy
Aiello Family Chiropractic uses safe low-force chiropractic techniques in the treatment of all types of patients including children, pregnant women, and people who have undergone previous spinal surgeries. These techniques include traditional Diversified, Sacral Occipital, and Activator techniques. Our Chiropractic approach is based on Functional Neurologic evaluation and treatments. This approach is a very specific approach to Chiropractic Care incorporating spinal manipulation, massage therapy, and low level red light laser therapy. Dr. Aiello also incorporates lifestyle modification, exercise/stretching protocols and home rehabilitation techniques. Flexion Distraction Therapy
The original techniques were based on the teachings of D.D. Palmer. His theory dealt with subluxation impinging nerves and affecting nerve tension. Misalignments can tense or slack a nerve causing changes in vibrational frequency affecting the communication of the brain with the body. While X-ray was not around in the early stage of chiropractic the belief was that bones were out of place and needed to be popped in. D.D. Palmer would feel the spine and make corrections based on how the boney alignment felt. Soon with the development of X-rays his son, B.J. Palmer introduced this new technology as an assessment tool. Palmer School of Chiropractic was the first school teaching the Palmer Methods overtime new schools opened across the country all following Subluxation philosophy but adapting different types of adjusting techniques. As new schools started opening and more doctors were practicing new spinal adjusting techniques started being taught. New ideas brought the development of many techniques both for detecting subluxations and corrections of them. Commonly used Subluxation techniques include Palmer Upper Cervical, Gonstead, Thompson Drop, Applied Kinesiology, Activator, Logan Basic, Sacro-Occipital, Flexion Distraction, and Pierce-Stillwagon. The most common Diversified techniques are harder to place names on because it has their own philosophy, so methods vary based on school teaching this method, and many use manipulation techniques from the subluxation techniques. As an example, I am considered a Diversified practitioner and I use a method called coupled adjusting technique which I believe is the optimal method to free restricted segments, but I also use some parts of the Sacro-Occipital Technique and on occasion, I use the Activator Tool or Thompson Drop to deliver an adjustment. I believe every person is unique and some corrections would use too much force for a person or the opposite a person needs more force than normally used.
