Founded in 1965, the Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity is a community action agency that provides social and child development services to the low-income residents of the Jefferson County, Ala. It operates a variety of federal, state and locally funded programs, projects and services to alleviate poverty and assist people of low-income families. It emphasizes on weatherization, commodity food distribution, manpower development, training programs and counseling on housing, legal assistance, substance abuse and employment. It has nutrition centers that offer meals and financial assistance to senior citizens. The agency organizes educational programs in leadership, creativity, teamwork, technical writing, acting skills and computer science. It has a team of more than 400 employees and is headquartered in Birmingham, Ala.
