Dental Care
When pets have their teeth cleaned, we conduct an oral health assessment and provide our clients with treatment suggestions. Digital x-rays assist us in making those recommendations by giving us insight into underlying issues.
Vaccination
During their first year, your kitten or puppy will require regular visits with their veterinarian. These visits are comprised of physical exams, vaccinations, and diagnostic testing – all of which allow us to keep tabs on your pet’s health as they grow and develop.

During your pet's behavior consultation, we will review your pet's history, provide a physical evaluation and diagnosis, and work with you to develop a treatment plan.

Dr. Jennifer Schissler is a veterinary dermatologist with a passion for collaborating with clients and veterinarians to achieve the best outcomes for beloved dogs and cats with ear and skin conditions. She earned her DVM degree at Colorado State University in 2005. Following a rotating internship at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital and a three year residency at The Ohio State University, she became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Dermatology in 2009. After two years in private practice in Louisville, Kentucky, Jennifer was a faculty dermatologist and otologist at Colorado State University for 10 years. She has proudly trained 5 dermatology residents, authored book chapters and articles, and provides continuing education for veterinarians at international, national, and local events.

Both puppies and kittens should have certain diagnostic tests over the course of their first year. Puppies should be tested for heartworm by 12 months of age, if not before. Kittens, on the other hand, should be tested for feline leukemia (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) during their first exam.

Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Hydrotherapy uses water to help rehabilitate injuries your dog might have and to also relieve pain. It's especially beneficial for dogs who have conditions such as a torn ACL, hip dysplasia, degenerative joint disease, arthritis, or dogs who have been paralyzed or lost a limb.

Kidney Disease Treatment
The goal of blood transfusion is to treat symptoms caused by anemia by replacing red blood cells so that proper oxygenation of organs can occur. Blood transfusions are most often used in acute situations such as acute hemolysis (breakdown of red blood cells) or blood loss, but can also be used for chronic conditions such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia or chronic kidney disease.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental disease, specifically periodontal disease, is the most common ailment affecting pet dogs and cats. According to the American veterinary Dental Society, more than 80% of dogs and 70% of cats develop gum disease by the age of three. Periodontal disease can have a serious impact on both your pet’s well-being and general health.

If your pet has been diagnosed with cancer, chemotherapy may be an option for them. At Best Friends Animal Hospital and Urgent Care Center, our veterinary oncologist can discuss treatment options including chemotherapy. Chemotherapy can slow the spread of cancer, shrink tumors prior to surgery, and buy precious time with terminally ill pets.

Wound and Fracture Care
We offer a variety of orthopedic procedures, from fracture repairs to cruciate ligament fixation. For fractures, we offer bone plating in addition to more traditional methods such as pins and wires. We offer TPLOs for cruciate ligament injuries and disk surgery for intervertebral disk disease. We offer advanced soft tissue surgery including persistant right aortic arch correction, patent ductus arteriosus repair, liver shunt repair, diaphragmatic hernia repair, and liver and lung lobe resection.

We have leading-edge in house laboratory diagnostic equipment that greatly aids in our diagnosis and treatment of disease. We have the latest Abaxis Chemistry Analyzer (VetScan, VSpro coagulation analyzer, and i-Stat) and Hematology Analyzer (HM5) that give us results in minutes, instead of hours or days. We perform many common laboratory tests in-house but also have the ability to send out samples for specific tests to a variety of comprehensive laboratories.
