Ultrasound
Breast ultrasound is a form of diagnostic imaging performed to help locate and examine any abnormal tissues inside the breast and guide the biopsy needle toward them by exposing your breasts to high-frequency sound waves that create images of the breast tissue. These images are captured in real-time and can show the movement of the inner organs, along with blood flowing through blood vessels in the area. A breast biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure that allows your doctor to analyze any abnormal breast tissue in great detail to determine whether the tissue is benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous).
MRI
Just because you have a higher risk of developing breast cancer does not mean that you will get the disease. But it is prudent to visit your doctor more frequently for exams, mammograms and possibly other forms of screening including MRI or ultrasound of the breast if you have a family history of the condition. Your doctor may recommend testing for the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene, which are both associated with familial cases of breast cancer. In some cases, prophylactic surgery to remove the breasts will be considered if your risk is exceptionally high.
X-Rays
Mammography
Atypical hyperplasia is not cancer, but a precancerous condition in which a multitude of abnormal cells are discovered within a duct or milk gland (lobule) of the breast. It cannot be detected through mammography or felt during an exam. Atypical hyperplasia is often found when there was another area of concern revealed on a mammogram or during an examination that necessitated a biopsy of breast tissue for assessment. As those tissue samples are analyzed in the laboratory, atypical hyperplasia may be diagnosed.
Chemotherapy
Traditionally, when a woman had a mastectomy all, or almost all, of the tissue was removed along with the breast. This tissue consists of fat, lymph nodes, lymph and blood vessels, and some nerves. Removal of this tissue either as part of a mastectomy or through a separate incision in the axilla is called an axillary dissection. Surgeons used to think that the best way to treat breast cancer was to remove the entire breast and any cancer cells that might be in the axillary tissue. During the last 20 years, we now understand that removing the axilla does not prevent the spread of breast cancer. At about this same time, we learned that we can treat breast cancer with breast conservation (removing only the cancer from the breast, followed by radiation to the remaining breast tissue). And we found that we could make a separate incision in the axilla and remove some, but not all, of the tissue there. We also learned that those women who do have cancer cells in their axilla benefit from additional treatment with chemotherapy or hormone therapy. Also, in those women who have some cancer cells in their nodes, it sometimes helps us to know how many nodes have these cells so that we can plan additional treatment.
Radiation Therapy
Radiation therapy may be used in the chest area to treat some forms of cancer. If you have undergone such treatment, close monitoring of your breasts for signs of cancer is very important. It is estimated that approximately 20 percent of women who received chest radiation during childhood develop breast cancer by the age of 45. The radiation is often very successful in eliminating cancerous cells and its benefits outweigh future risks. But sometimes this therapy will cause changes to normal breast cells, which increases the risk of breast cancer years later.

Dr. James Vopal received his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin, and his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from Marquette University School of Dentistry. He then earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He went on to Residencies in the Department of Surgery at the University of Miami School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Hospital, first in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and subsequently in the Division of General and Vascular Surgery.

Breast Reconstruction
This procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia in an outpatient setting. In most circumstances patients may choose to undergo breast reconstruction during the same procedure in order to reduce the risks of additional surgery and to be able to wake up from surgery with a new breast mound. Reconstruction may include the placement of an implant or an autologous flap taken from the abdomen or back. The flaps, referred to as TRAM, DIEP and latissimus flaps, are used to reconstruct the breast.
