Fillings
In the past, amalgam fillings were the standard in repair for decayed teeth. While amalgam fillings are crafted from durable materials, the metals expand and contract with changes in temperature causing potential damage to remaining dental structure. Additionally, because the amalgam is held in place with a layer of dental cement, more dental structure needs to be removed to accommodate the filling, and over time, the cement may breakdown leading to additional decay. Tooth colored, composite resin fillings offer cosmetically and restoratively superior results. The composite resin is applied directly to the prepared teeth, shaped into position, and hardened in place with a curing light. The material does not expand and contract with temperature changes and because it is applied directly to the tooth, less healthy structure is removed and there is a reduced chance of future decay or breaking away of the restoration. Composite resin is sometimes referred to as direct bonding and in addition to being used to repair decayed, cracked, or chipped teeth, they can also be used to conceal staining and discoloration and fill gaps in teeth.
Resin Composite
Composite resin fillings have transformed the way we restore decayed, cracked, or chipped teeth, and cosmetic bonding is quickly transforming the way we correct more cosmetic concerns like uneven smile lines, stains, or gaps in teeth with the same tooth-colored resin material. Like composite fillings, cosmetic bonding can be completed in just one visit, so for those patients with less extensive cosmetic concerns, bonding may be a faster, more affordable alternative to porcelain veneers. Unlike veneers, cosmetic bonding is typically reversible if patients find they are unhappy with the appearance of their smiles following bonding. The process is simple. In some cases we may remove a small amount of tooth enamel, but typically, this is unnecessary. We then shade the composite resin to blend with patients’ smiles, apply the resin in a malleable state of the tooth, shape it into position, and use a curing light to harden it in place instantly creating a flawless smile.
Veneers
Possibly one of the fastest and most comfortable cosmetic dentistry services, porcelain veneers are used to conceal any number of smile flaws including chips, cracks, stains, gaps, and more in two short visits. A veneer is a thin sheath of dental grade porcelain that is fitted over the fronts of teeth to conceal flaws and leave patients with beautiful smiles. The procedure typically requires two appointments. During the first visit, a minimal amount of enamel is removed from the surface of patients’ teeth to accommodate the veneer allowing it to blend seamlessly into the smile. Once teeth are prepared, we capture dental impressions and place temporary veneers to protect prepared teeth. Our dental lab uses the impressions to craft customized veneers, and patients return to our Bedford practice for a second appointment to exchange their temporary for the permanent porcelain veneers. With proper care, this stain resistant porcelain restoration can last for ten or more years.
Crowns
For smiles that appear “gummy” or patients with uneven or excessive gum tissue, cosmetic gum recontouring allows our team to reshape patients’ smiles quickly and effectively for more even looking smiles. Additionally, recontouring may be necessary prior to placing a dental crown. Often referred to as crown lengthening, this procedure is performed to expose more dental structure to support a crown placed on a specific tooth, but often, it’s necessary to continue the process on surrounding teeth to ensure patients’ smiles retain their beautiful appearance.
Bridges
Fixed bridges use dental crowns placed over healthy teeth to support replacement teeth. Dental crowns are sometimes able to support as many as three consecutive prosthetic teeth. The entire crown and bridge restoration is crafted and placed as a single unit, and the process is similar to the placement of a single crown requiring at least two visits one for preparation and one for placement.

Root Canal Treatment
The phrase root canal is enough to scare off many of our toughest patients. When it comes to root canal therapy, we have good news and bad news. The good news is root canals are actually no more uncomfortable than other restorative treatments like dental crowns or fillings. The bad news is the infection that leads to root canals can be quite painful. If you experience severe toothache or sensitivity to changes in temperature that lingers, you may be experiencing root canal infection, the decay or damage of the innermost layer of teeth. Pulp, the inner layer, houses the entire nerve system of the tooth which may cause severe pain if left untreated. Root canal therapy begins with the drilling of an access hole through which the dental pulp is removed. Once the infected inner tissue is removed, the pain associated diminishes almost immediately. The treated tooth is then refilled and sealed. In most cases, a dental crown is placed over the tooth to protect the repaired structure and provide optimal support.

Dentures
Partial and full dentures allow our team to comfortably replace any number of missing teeth. Partial dentures are composed from a number of replacement teeth set into a gum-colored base. The partials fill gaps in patients’ smiles like a puzzle piece and are held in place with metal clasps connected to remaining healthy teeth. Full dentures include a full arch of prosthetic teeth set into a gum-colored base. The malleable base is molded specifically to fit against the gums with natural suction and denture adhesive.

Dental Implants
The first step in the dental implant process is the placement of implant posts below the gum line. This minor surgical procedure requires patients be healthy enough for moderately invasive medical treatment and have adequate healthy jawbone structure to support the implant post. The process is simple. A small incision is made in the gum line where the post is to be placed. Then, the post is positioned into the jawbone where it fuses with the underlying alveolar bone and supportive gum tissue to mimic natural dental roots.

Orthodontics
One of the most popular alternative orthodontic treatments available for our patients is Invisalign. As the materials and techniques used have advanced, Invisalign is now able to provide correction on par with traditional bracket and wire braces without the distinguishable mouth full of metal. The system is simple. Patients wear a set of custom crafted alignment trays that represent a step closer to their ideal smile for about two weeks. Over that time, the aligners place consistent pressure on teeth gently shifting them into this new position. At the end of the pre-determined wear time, patients exchange their alignment trays for the next set in the series. The entire treatment process typically takes between 10 and 18 months, and patients do not need to visit our office as frequently for checkups saving them significant amounts of time compared with traditional bracket and wire braces. In addition to saving time, Invisalign aligners are completely removable. That means patients don’t need to worry about making changes to their oral hygiene routines or diets. Simply remove the trays during meals and while brushing and flossing.
