Our facilities are equipped with the latest in veterinary technology. We have onsite X-ray, ultrasound, endosocpy, laproscopy, cystoscopy, a chemistry laboratory and full surgical capabilities. We also offer complete dental care, and advanced options for feline cancer patients.
Vaccination
Since many of us are now getting vaccinated, we are anticipating the day when humans will be allowed back into our offices. We will not rush back into “business as usual”, but will institute a gradual transition back to owners with pets within our office. The first step is to have all of our employees that want to be vaccinated do so, and have the appropriate wait time after the vaccination for full immunity.

• Metabolic changes are common in older cats. You may notice either a weight gain or a weight loss as the first outward sign of metabolic change.
Comprehensive Examination
There may be the need for last-minute schedule changes, so please be patient with our staff and we will try to meet all of your needs. Annual exams may need to be pushed out for a few weeks so that we can accommodate any sick patients. Hopefully, we will be at full staff be the end of the summer and we will resume taking new patients at that time.

We have seen excellent results with pain relief for our chronic osteoarthritic cats. Many older felines are able to jump better, use stairs, and become more functional cats again. Also during this first visit we will take a small blood sample to test for the Feline Leukemia Virus and the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Unfortunately Feline Leukemia is fatal and may or may not cause any initial symptoms. FIV is often a non-fatal illness but can lead to certain diseases as your cat gets older and you should consider the risk of infection to other cats in your household. The test will determine whether your kitten has either of these diseases and we can counsel you appropriately if the test is positive.

Laser therapy can be used to decrease both pain and inflammation in many disease states. It can also be used to promote and accelerate wound healing. Diseases that we can use this therapy are: Osteoarthritis,( both acute and chronic), chronic kidney disease, plasma cell stomatitis, wound healing, and acupuncture points.

With these tests, we can detect the existence of diabetes, thyroid disease, early kidney disease, various blood disorders and many more medical problems which can be treated early in order to avoid much more serious, and often life threatening, problems later.
Heart Disease Treatment
Ultrasound of the heart is also widely used in veterinary medicine, and is referred to as "echocardiography". Although our ultrasound machine is capable of producing images of the heart, we usually leave this advanced technique to a board-certified cardiologist. Ultrasound images of the heart show it beating, so that abnormalities of heart contraction or valve movement can be identified. The ultrasound machine can also "freeze" images, allowing the cardiologist to measure the dimensions of the chambers of the heart and the thickness of the walls. This technique is the only way to accurately identify the source of a heart murmur. "Echo" can help us tell whether a murmur originates from a harmless valve leakage or potentially fatal cardiac muscle disease. The cardiologist also uses an advanced ultrasound technique, called Doppler, to look for turbulence in the blood flow and to determine how fast blood is moving through the heart valves.
Kidney Disease Treatment
So now, when is it the proper time to make this decision? Cats with severe injuries are a little easier to make make the decision. If there is no hope of a functional life following an injury then the decision should be made immediately. However with chronic disease such as kidney failure, cancer, or just old age, it is difficult to pinpoint the exact proper time.

Soft Paws Soft Paws are a temporary nail coverings made out of a soft plastic material. They are applied with an adhesive which covers the claw. Soft Paws need to be changed every 6 to 8 weeks to adjust to new nail growth. New Soft Paws are applied after the nails are trimmed. The Soft Paws prevent direct contact between your furniture and your cat's claws, so although the scratching behavior will continue, you won't have the resultant damage. As with nail trimming, a Cat Doctor technician can apply Soft Paws to your cat or teach you how to apply them. One advantage of Soft Paws over surgical options is that declawing surgery only removes the nails of the front feet. Soft Paws may be applied to all four feet. The obvious disadvantage is that it is a procedure that has to be repeated fairly frequently.
Spaying and Neutering
There are 82 million cats in the United States. In Massachusetts alone there are an estimated 400,000 to 700,000 stray cats! Many of these beautiful creatures are destroyed. Many others remain on the streets to continue breeding. This is a cycle we can stop with a fairly simple procedure. To keep your cat from contributing to the overpopulation problem and to help keep her healthy (and your karma glowing), we recommend spaying (ovariohysterectomy) or neutering (castration) at four months of age. We strongly urge having this done before females come into heat or males begin to spray.

Working as a small animal veterinarian, Dr. Carlson noted that the typical small animal clinic experience was highly stressful for the average cat. In 1987 he established The Cat Doctor, the second, cats-only veterinarian clinic in Massachusetts. Dr Bob is retired from seeing patients but will still be involved for management and case consultations.
