Jaw Surgery
Corrective jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) treats and corrects abnormalities of the facial bones, specifically the jaws and the teeth. Often, these abnormalities cause difficulty associated with chewing, talking, sleeping and other routine activities.
Tooth Extractions

Orthodontics
Board certification through the American Board of Orthodontics is a voluntary process by which an orthodontist has demonstrated the highest level of skill, knowledge and education through a written and oral clinical exam. To become board certified, you must have graduated from an accredited orthodontic specialty program which makes you eligible to take the first part of the boards, the written exam. Upon successful completion of the written exam, you are then eligible to take the oral clinical exam. This part of the exam requires you to present 6 completed orthodontic cases that have met a minimum level of difficulty, to a board of orthodontic examiners. The examiners evaluate your level of knowledge and skill in treating these difficult cases.
Invisalign Orthodontics
® System is a series of clear overlay templates called aligners that have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move the teeth. This system is available to adult patients and some teenagers with certain orthodontic bite problems. Ask us if you are a candidate for the Invisalign system.
Braces
Sometimes baby teeth need to be removed early to begin orthodontic treatment. If it is determined that the time to start braces is soon and the baby teeth are not close to falling out, the orthodontist will request that the general dentist remove some or all of the remaining baby teeth so that movement of the permanent teeth can occur and at the same time, encourage the eruption of the rest of the permanent teeth. There are many scenarios where this would be beneficial, but not enough room in this article to discuss here. There are times where baby teeth have no permanent teeth to replace them. This most often occurs with the lower baby molars. When that situation exist, sometimes the baby molar tooth becomes ankylosed, meaning that the roots become fused to the surrounding bone and don’t erupt with the adjacent permanent teeth. The tooth actually looks like it is sinking into the gum tissues. This situation often calls for the removal of the baby molar to prevent a large difference in the heights of the adjacent teeth and other periodontal problems. There is a situation that sometimes occurs when the 6 year molars erupt. For unknown reasons the upper first molar will erupt under the baby molar in front of it. If it is identified early by the dentist or orthodontist, the erupting molar can be redirected with minimal intervention. If the eruption of the molar results in the resorption of the root of the baby molar, extraction of the baby molar is required to allow the permanent molar to erupt and this usually results in a lack of space for the future premolar. This will require orthodontic intervention to regain space.

General Dentistry
During his tour in the Navy he also completed a hospital-based residency program in general dentistry at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. Before pursuing his career in dentistry, Dr. Hesby graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. Through the NROTC program, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Navy and was selected for the Navy’s Nuclear Power program where he served onboard a nuclear submarine in Groton, CT.
