Ear Infections
Colds, upper respiratory infections, and URIs are common terms we use to describe viral illnesses that cause nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, fever, and cough. The fever usually lasts for 2-3 days, and the cough with congestion and runny nose may last for 5-10 days. The typical preschool-age child may experience 6-10 colds per year. Most colds resolve on their own with rest and fluids, but some may lead to ear infection, sinus infection, asthma attack, or other complications. If you are concerned about the possibility of one of these complications, please have your child seen in our office for an evaluation.

Monica is originally from Bardstown, KY. She attended the University of Louisville where she graduated Magna Cum Laude with her Bachelors of Arts in Biology in 2003, and a Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 2006. Monica was a certified pediatric nurse at Kosair Children’s Hospital for seven years before returning to the University of Louisville to complete a Masters of Science in Nursing. Monica became a certified Family Nurse Practitioner in 2013. She practiced family medicine in Lebanon, KY for 5 years before joining Physicians to Children & Adolescents in 2018. Monica and her husband, Linwood, reside in Bardstown with their three children, Lawson, Boone, and Sloane

Amber began her nursing career in 2012 in Norton Children's Hospital Emergency Department. She graduated with her Nurse Practitioner Degree in 2016 and began her career as a Nurse Practitioner at Norton Women's and Children's in the pediatric emergency department in 2017.

Dr. Block attended medical school at the University of Kentucky and completed his pediatric residency at Wake Forest University. He is a board certified pediatrician and has been re-certified by the AAP. Dr. Block is a nationally recognized speaker in infectious diseases, vaccines, general pediatrics and ADHD. When he is not seeing patients he enjoys being a reviewer, writer, and editorial board: Pediatric Annuals and Infectious Diseases in Children. He is also a reviewer for the CDC/NIH federal vaccine grants. Dr. Block has received numerous national awards including 1998 Researcher of the year and in 2004 he was honored as UK Distinguished Alumnus Award. He has authored or co-authored 140+ peer reviewed medical articles, including vital vaccines. Perhaps most special, he was locally voted Best Pediatrician 2010-2014 by the Bardstown Community.

While antibiotics have minimal effect on the course of the illness once the classic whooping cough has begun, they are recommended to limit the spread of the illness. Confirmation of the illness by a medical provider helps guard against the overuse of antibiotics in the setting of a viral illness and subsequent development of organisms that are resistant to antibiotics. Control measures: All household contacts of young infants should receive a pertussis vaccine booster. Others who are unimmunized or under-immunized should complete the recommended schedule of immunizations (see our website for the recommended vaccination schedule). Household contacts and other close contacts of those who have been diagnosed with pertussis should receive prophylactic antibiotic treatment to prevent transmission of the disease. Students and school staff with a confirmed diagnosis of pertussis should be excused from school until they have completed a five day course of antibiotic therapy.

Jennifer began her nursing career at Jewish Hospital in Oncology and Transplant nursing in 2006 after graduating from the University of Louisville. She spent most of her career as a high risk obstetrics nurse at Norton's Women and Children's hospital. After 10 years of bedside nursing she decided to pursue her Nurse Practitioner career. She graduated from Harding University and is now practicing as a Nurse Practitioner and Lactation Counselor.
