Wandee has been a practicing psychologist working with children, adolescents, adults and families since 2009. She earned her Psy.D. from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco and previously trained in outpatient medical, nonprofit and county mental health settings where she focused on cognitive behavior therapy and mindfulness-based treatments, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). She has experience working with individuals, couples and families, as well as running groups for teen aged girls recovering from sexual abuse, young children and teenagers with anxiety disorders, teens managing depression and adults struggling with substance abuse and PTSD. Wandee pioneered one of the first Kaiser Northern California group treatments for teens with chronic pain and has experience working collaboratively with hospital pediatric departments and departments of infectious diseases to better service individuals with chronic medical conditions. Wandee previously served on the Best Practices Committee for PTSD treatment in adolescents for Kaiser Northern California.

I’ve seen first-hand how trauma can affect a child’s overall development and how those traumas can follow them into adulthood unless treated. I have experience treating children from the ages of 4-18 experiencing symptoms of Attachment Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Anxiety, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Depression, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), Oppositional Defiant Disorder (OSD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and children with various developmental disorders. My experience involves working with children individually, working with children in same-aged peer groups, and working with children and their families together.

In mental health, many of the conditions we treat exist on a spectrum. Addiction is one of those (I am continuing to use the popular word, even though in our diagnostic vocabulary we now talk about “Use Disorder,” because now you understand that consideration of an addiction can be broken down into a few simple components.) There is no bright shining line that defines where addiction starts, and no easy measurement of how far it has advanced. You aren’t addicted on Wednesday when you weren’t on Tuesday. And someone who has been clearly addicted for years sometimes has an easier time recovering than someone who shows fewer overt signs of disease. But for most of us and in most situations the problems that go with addiction start small and slowly get worse. They can continue getting worse until they are life-threatening, in a steady drip drip that often takes many years. But here’s another simple guideline: when is it time to call a plumber? As soon as you notice the leak, not after the basement is flooded. I maintain that you don’t have to be addicted to a drug before you should take a serious look at giving it up, so where you are in the progression says more about how hard it will be to quit than it does about whether to quit.

I believe that mental health conditions can be compared to physical injuries. For example when you sprain your ankle, you need to go to see a specialist. She/he will prescribe you some anti-inflammatory medications – maybe Ibuprofen and some Cortisone shots. Then you will need to attend physical therapy (PT). If you work hard during your PT appointments, your ankle will get better and you will need less medication. The same can be said about mental health disorders. In the beginning you will need some psychiatric medications to help with emergent or severe problems but then psychotherapy will help you sustain and maintain a balance. I will help with the medication portion of treatment and a team of Psychologists and Counselors will provide other comprehensive services. Human beings have an overwhelming capacity to heal, and effective healing and personal growth are achieved from a continuous partnership between clients and their healthcare providers. I am here to facilitate your recovery by providing knowledge about new research in the field of neuroscience, medications and expanded understanding of mental disorders.
