In 1966, Robert Onstead, Norman Frewin and R.C. Barclay pursued the concept of a discount supermarket and developed Randalls. Among the company s offerings are delis which serve hot foods and sandwiches, on-site bakeries, electronic check cashing, mart carts for seniors and special prices advertised in the large front windows. During the 1990s, its size nearly doubled with the acquisition of Tom Thumb stores and Simon David gourmet stores. Today, Randalls and Tom Thumb brands include more than 127 combination food and drug stores. The company now operates as a part of Safeway, which is one of the largest food and drug retailers in North America. It has deli, seafood, produce, pharmacy and floral departments. Randalls product line includes bakery and dairy items, beverages, general merchandise, and health and personal care products. The company s stores also feature various types of beer, wines and packaged meat products. It operates a health and nutrition center that offers information on diabetes, stress, allergies and arthritis. Randalls offers photo development, adult immunization and online shopping services. In addition, the company funds and supports several nonprofit organizations. Randalls maintains various stores in Austin, Texas.
