Founded in 2007, Premier Eye Physicians, PC was the first ophthalmic care practice to open its doors in southwest Atlanta. Currently located in the Camp Creek Medical Center, we have established ourselves as the premier eye care facility in the area. Our goal is to offer you the best level of ophthalmic service coupled with the finest state of the art technology. Our staff takes the time to know the patients and their families to enhance the already warm atmosphere you will experience the moment you enter the facility. With the goal of integrating state of the art technology with exceptional patient care, Premier Eye Physicians, PC specializes in a wide range of eye problems including cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disease, dry eyes, diabetic retinopathy evaluation, lasik evaluations and comprehensive eye examinations as well as routine eye examinations for glasses or contact lens.
Ophthalmology
A warm smile and friendly handshake or hug...... that is how your first and future visit will always start with Dr. Harris. Caring, compassionate and exceptional are some of the words used by patients to describe his demeanor. Dr. Harris is a practicing comprehensive Ophthalmologist who sees children as well as adults. He received his training in ophthalmology at the world renowned Harvard Medical School. Prior to starting his Ophthalmology training, Dr. Harris was selected for a prestigious fellowship at the National Eye Institute (NEI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. Along with his colleagues at the NEI his work led to finding a defective gene termed RPE65 which is responsible for a particular form of human blindness referred to as Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis. This led to the first utilization of gene therapy in the human body to treat blindness. In December of 2017 the FDA approved the drug termed Luxturna. This marks the first FDA approved medication in the field of gene therapy that targets a disease caused by mutations in a specific gene. Since this time several patients have undergone treatment with Luxturna and have gone from blindness to sight!
Macular Degeneration
Dr. Harris also completed a fellowship in ocular genetics at the Institute of Ocular Molecular Genetics of Harvard Medical School. While in the lab he studied genetic involvement in Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, Retinitis Pigmentosa, Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis and other eye abnormalities. He is one of the few fellowship trained ocular geneticist practicing clinical ophthalmology in the United States. Dr. Harris has been a guest speaker and lectured nationally on several eye topics. In addition to publishing numerous scientific papers, he has received several awards and recognitions for his innovative surgical techniques and outstanding bedside manner. Dr. Harris was the first eye surgeon at South Fulton Tenant Hospital to implant the “premium lens” for cataract surgery; this is the most advanced lens technology implant that affords patients the opportunity to be spectacle free for near and distance vision. One of the hallmarks of how Dr. Harris practices medicine is his emphasis on utilizing the latest technology and surgical advances to provide cutting edge patient care.
Laser Eye Surgery
Dry eyes occur when the quality and quantity of your tear film is decreased. This is a very common illness and affects millions of adults in the United States. The prevalence of dry eyes is more common in women than men. Studies have shown this may be due to decreased estrogen levels in women with advancing age. The signs of dry eyes include scratchiness, itchiness or feelings of a grain of sand in the eyes. This condition can also cause blurriness and feelings of lid heaviness. Dry eyes can also be caused by medications, autoimmune disorders, smoking, seasonal allergies, insufficient blinking and after eye surgery. Premier Eye Physicians has been distinguished as a “Dry Eye Center of Excellence.” This is awarded to eye care facilities that offer the latest diagnostic and treatment options available for this condition. Cataracts
An astigmatism is an extremely common problem in patients that wear glasses. It is due to an imperfect shape of the cornea. This is the clear part of the front of the eye that is shaped more like a football than a perfectly round basketball. The glasses help to correct the astigmatism but when the glasses are not worn the vision again is blurry. When patients with an astigmatism develop cataracts they now have an option to remove the cataract and replace it with a clear lens and correct the astigmatism at the same time. These lens implants are referred to as toric lenses. They can help patients alleviate the need for glasses at distance. Because these lenses are a monofocal lens patients may still need to wear reading glasses for close vision. Premier Eye Physicians offers the latest lens technology to correct your astigmatism.
Cataract Surgery
When having cataract surgery nowadays you have options on which intraocular lens to use. The standard lens is referred to as a monofocal implant. As the name implies this lens has a single focus of vision. Typically a patient with a monofocal lens will require at least reading glasses and most likely corrective glasses for distance as well. For patients interested in decreasing the need for wearing glasses at all a new type of lens is now available. This is referred to as a multifocal lens. Eye Exam
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States. Unfortunately at this point in time there is no cure for glaucoma. The disease can only be decreased in how fast it can progress. There are several different types of glaucoma with the most common being open angle glaucoma. It has been referred to as the “silent thief” because of its ability to cause vision loss without warning signs or painful symptoms. If you have relatives who have glaucoma you are at increased risk of developing this disease. Also people of African American or Latino descent are at increased risk. Recent studies have shown there may also be a correlation between having diabetes and cardiovascular disease leading to developing glaucoma. Because glaucoma has no early warning signs it is imperative that you get a full eye examination to detect this site stealing disease. Diabetic Retinopathy
Diabetes is a very common illness in the United States. It affects approximately 10% of the population and one in four people do not realize they have this disease. It is caused by elevated blood glucose or blood sugar that is too high. This elevated blood sugar can affect many organs in the body and can have disastrous effects on your vision. The tissue in the back of the eye called the retina can be impaired by elevated blood sugar. When the eyes are involved this is called diabetic retinopathy. The disease can cause the blood vessels to leak fluid and cause swelling in the area of the retina called the macula. Early detection is imperative to saving vision in patients with diabetic retinopathy. Premier Eye Physicians offers the latest diagnostic testing to detect this disease early in its course.
