Kitchen Remodeling
Appliances were relocated and new handcrafted cabinets of quarter-sawn oak and black granite countertops were installed to improve the workflow and capture some of the style of the original kitchen casework. More cabinets and a fold-down desk were installed in the pantry.
Bathroom Remodeling
The interior of the house had been “modernized” through the years, particularly the kitchen and bathrooms, with the loss of some of the original interior details.
Flooring
The stairs terminate in a separate finished vestibule with quarry tile flooring, with separate closets for the furnace and water heater.
Door Installation/Replacement
Framing
The original house had hollow clay tile and face brick exterior walls and interior wood framing. New exterior walls were constructed with 2x6 framing and insulation was provided throughout. The exterior brick was maintained at the first floor and the second floor is sheathed in stained cedar shingles.

The upstairs fireplace mantels had been removed by previous occupants, so the new owners installed salvaged mantels and tile from the original period of construction.

Room Additions
In the past, when possible, we have tried to find ways to incorporate the work of local artists and craftspeople as part of our design – Kathy Triplett’s tiles representing Asheville’s architectural history and Danny Reiser’s execution of decorative plaster capitals that pay tribute to the design legacy of Douglas Ellington, both at Pack Place; Diana Gillespie’s tiles representative of native plants and animals at Haw Creek Park; working with Handmade In America to envision the use of crafts in affordable housing at Prospect Terrace; Kathy Triplett’s tiles again at the YWCA to reflect the organization’s history and service; and working with the staff at the Penland School of Crafts to utilize craft wherever possible as they undertake additions and renovations related to life-safety code improvements. Individually the team members of Mathews Architecture bring their own artistic sensibilities and interests beyond just architecture, with experience in fine woodworking, sculpture, painting, textile design, and music.

Landscaping
Outdoor structures should reflect a harmony and unity of architecture and the natural environment. We craft seamless, graceful and scaled progressions from inside to out, and back again.
Driveways
The kitchen was completely updated and it provides a contemporary accent to the historic Arts & Crafts character found in the rest of the house. In the dining room a buffet in the owners’ collection was incorporated as a built-in in the wall between the dining room and the rear sunroom. This also helps to provide additional daylight into the center of the house. A new Arts & Crafts style window seat was built under the salvaged stained glass windows along the wall that faces the driveway shared with the next-door neighbors. The original windows were moved and re-installed on the other side of the house to provide light into the interior stairwell.
Retaining Walls
The family room extension incorporates an arched doorway with sidelights, bracketing and exposed rafter tails that draws on Reid’s original design. These open out onto a new patio, whose rough stone retaining wall mimics the low stone wall that borders the property along the road below.

The new Dining Room, with all window and door casing faux grained to mimic the quarter-sawn oak of the owners' furniture.
Decks
Located on a nearby ridgetop at an elevation of more than 4,000 feet, this private residence has a commanding view of the valley below. Unlike some of the neighboring homes, this structure takes full advantage of the view while still remaining low on the site and relatively invisible from the valley below. The house is approximately 4,000 square feet with the majority of the living space on one floor in two v-shaped wings conforming to the site contours. One wing is dedicated for the master bedroom suite and the other for the kitchen, dining and guest bedroom. The axis of the two wings is the large living room with contemporary horizontal gas fireplace, large timber framed beams and access to the west facing decks. A partial lower level provides additional guest and family living and sleeping accommodations. The wings are connected with a skylit gallery that houses some of the owner’s extensive collection of African and East European art. The design for the house including coordination of niches and shelving for displayed artwork, integrated lighting systems, and protection of artwork from degradation ultraviolet light through the design of appropriate glazing systems. The aesthetic challenge of the house was to create a mountain home that nestled into the landscape, felt indigenous to the site which would comfortably embrace the owner’s eclectic collection of art. The materials used include native stone, including from on site, cedar and cement stucco, meant to compliment the natural woodland setting, The few disturbed areas have been reclaimed with the well planned re-introduction of native plants and flowers. The configuration of the floor plan makes use of natural daylighting through clerestory windows and skylights throughout much of the house. Other sustainable features include the use of icyene and cellulose insulation, bamboo flooring, recycled glass tiles, and geothermal heat pumps. This project was completed in July of 2005.
Siding
The design she came up with used every bit of the property and honors Greene & Greene with its shingle siding, exposed structural framing and projecting rafter tails.
Residential Roof Repair
Renovation work included repairs to the slate and membrane roofing, replacement of windows, and cleaning and repointing of brick. A 2,000 square foot addition was added to the rear of the historic structure to provide connectivity and accessibility to all three levels and easy access to adjacent academic buildings.
Residential Roof Replacement/Installation
Set below the road on parkland, the design makes extensive use of vegetative roofing to minimize its visual impact. Rainwater is collected from the roof and diverted to an on-site bio-retention pond. More than 90% of the building is daylight with windows and Kalwall roof panels and nearly 100% of the materials have been sourced regionally.

Insulation
Work included new metal roof and insulation, new historically appropriate steel windows, all systems, and metal decking and stairs.
