The goal of rehabilitation after stroke is to teach you to become as independent as possible. The keystone to stroke rehabilitation is reteaching the brain to do the functions that have been affected by the stroke. The brain has an incredible ability to retrain a different area of the brain to take over the functions of the brain that have been lost due to the stroke. This is called neuroplasticity. “Neuro” refers to the brain cells and “plasticity” refers to the pliable nature of different brain cells to take over lost functions. With rehabilitation, brain cells regenerate, re-establish, and rearrange the needed brain circuits to resume lost functions despite the original cells and pathways having been damaged by the stroke. The brain effectively compensates for the dead or damaged brain cells. In instances where it cannot establish these new connections, rehabilitation works to teach the brain and body to compensate for the disabilities that occur due to the stroke.

A stroke affects the whole person; depending on the severity it can physically affect both your upper and lower limbs, your cognition, your vision, your speech and your emotional and mental health. These therapists have multiple decades of experience. They are extremely thorough in their evaluation of the patient’s status. Their communication skills are as good as their physical therapy skills. They are most articulate. They are also highly effective teachers of how a patient like myself can be an essential part of the recovery, preventing recurrence, and long term strategies for improvement. Their professional practice is extremely well run with a seriousness about on-time performance that I have never encountered in any other medical practice. I had made great progress under their care and guidance. I entered their treatment in considerable distress and graduated pain free and with insights I am putting into practice about how to take better care of myself! I have had prior experience with two other PT practices and several chiropractic practices—and these professionals and fine human beings are in a class by themselves!

Howie Dortch has lived in Asheville since 1987. He graduated that same year with a Master of Science degree from Boston University in Occupational Therapy. His area of specialization is in Hand and Upper Extremity Rehabilitation. Howie worked with the Hand Surgeons at Asheville Hand Center until 1992 when he and Dan Parobek opened Combined Therapy Specialties.

Manual Therapy
Lydia is skilled in assessing joint dysfunction to discern the underlying cause of pain, rather than treating only the symptoms. She enjoys working to help restore full maximum function for ankles/feet, knees, hips and shoulders, but is particularly excited to help resolve spine dysfunction and pain. She is accomplished in implementing McKenzie Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT). Her approach includes manual therapy along with focusing on teaching patient independence, rather than dependence on the therapist. Assisting her patients in resuming the activities they love is what makes her job so satisfying.
