Preventive Care

Dental Care
Beginning September 1st, we will be offering our Fall dental special that will run from September 1st to November 30th and then again from January 1st through March 15th. Dental health is a very important part of a pet’s health care and can greatly influence a their long term health. For more information about dentistry, go to “Healthy Pet Info” then “Dentistry” or surf through some of the educational links to learn how you can add years to the relationship with your four-legged best friend.
Vaccination
Should your pet need to stay with us for a weekend get-away or due to illness, they will spend their time in our separate interior, climate-controlled boarding facility or our isolation/Intesive Care Unit. These separate rooms with individual ventilation systems ensure that our “Bed and Breakfast” visitors are not exposed to our ill patients, who will stay in a quiet, calm atmosphere near our medical staff. Clients wishing to board their pets are required to provide a current vaccination record. Dogs must be current on rabies, DACLPP and Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccines. Cats must be current on rabies and FVRCPC plus leukemia vaccinations. Should your pet need any of the above-referenced vaccinations, they may be given on site.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
For unknown reasons, possibly due to other infections or an inherited tendency, cats can also develop infections from the tissue stages of the parasite. Usually, the infections do not cause disease; but sometimes cats with these infections can have serious outcomes that result in general ill health and eye problems.
Nutritional Counseling
One of the many job that veterinarians have from time to time is nutritional counseling. Following will be an asortment of nutritional facts and statments that will hopefully special family members healthier fo the long haul.
Comprehensive Examination
Wellness exams are crucial to your pet’s continued good health. On average a pet ages 7 times faster than humans, therefore, we recommend a comprehensive physical exam yearly for patients under 7 and twice yearly for patients 7 and older. We schedule ample time for your appointment to ensure that Dr. Wilson can go over his findings and answer any questions you may have.

Illness Treatment

Parasites Treatment and Control
The discussion with your veterinarian about heartworm treatment should begin as soon as a positive heartworm test has occured. There are several different types of heartworm tests and all (when positive) are evaluating for an infection of adult heartworms.
Pain Management
Pain management: We believe that all animals undergoing a surgical procedure be kept as pain free as possible. We give all pets an injection of anti-inflammatory pain medication immediately before surgery. We also give take home pain medications for the next few days after surgery. Good pain control helps pets heal faster and more effectively as well as relieve post-surgical discomfort.
Vomiting Treatment
Diarrhea Treatment
Dogs that are infected with a few whipworms may not have any signs of infection. More severe infections can cause bloody diarrhea. If an infected dog is not treated, then severe whipworm infection can cause serious disease and even death.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Skin problems or conditions are some of the most common things seen by veterinarians and can be caused by many different disorders, bacterias, mites or fleas, allergens or other problems. Mites and fleas can be read about on a different page under parasites. Usually there are bacterias (staph being the most common) and yeasts (such as malassezia) that are causing problems secondary to a primary condition (such as an allergy or immune conditions like thyroid disorders or pemphagus) The primary condition should be corrected in order for the bacterial/yeast infections to be cleared up with the help of medication and/or other treatments.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Allergies are a very common conditions and are sometimes misunderstood by owners. Allergies can be hard to diagnosis in some patients because of the many differnet way they can present in a certain patient. The most common symptom associated with allergies in dogs is itching of the skin either localized (in one area) or generalized (all over the body). Other symptoms could involve the respiratory system with coughing, sneezing an/or wheezing or the digestive system resulting in vomiting and diarrhea. For the ease of classification we will narrow allergies to 4 types: 1) Contatct allergies 2) Flea or Insect Bite Allergies 3) Inhalant Allergies or “Atopy” and 4) Food Allergies

Infection Treatment

Leptospirosis Treatment
Leptospira. This organism is contagious to and can be carried by many different species, including but not limited to cattle, wildlife (deer, squirrels, raccoons, opossums, foxes, coyotes, rats, mice, and skunks), dogs, rarely cats and people. Leptospirosis generally causes liver and kidney abnormalities that will be discussed later, Lepto is the number one zoonotic disease (contagious to people) in the world.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Most cases of Parvo are seen in dogs between 6 weeks and 6 months of age, with the most severe cases seen in the younger patients. There seems to be breed predilections for Rottweilers, Dobermans, Pit Bulls, Labrador retrievers, German shepards, English springer spaniels and Alaskan sled dogs, but any breed can be affected. Any canine pet ( of any age or breed ) showing the signs of lethargy, inappetence, vomiting or diarrhea should be viewed as suspicious for the parvovirus.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Feline Leukemia(felv): A retrovirus similar to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This is only transmittable to other felines. Given around 12 and 15 weeks and then yearly for all outside or high risk cats. We will discuss the pros/cons of giving the vaccine to indoor only cats.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
Parvo can be diagnosed with many different techniques. The most common would be with the combonation of a CBC, fecal examination and in-house canine parvo tests. The CBC is generally needed to determine how affected the white blood cells have been due to the fact that the virus will infectt the blood marrow and decrease the immune systems ability to fight off infection (either the primary viral infection and/or secondary bacterial infections). A fecal examination should also be preformed to look for changes to the stool itself and for parasites that could also be causing the characteristic symptoms. The last thing usually preformed is an in-house canine parvo test, which actually detects the excreted virus itself. Idexx labratory makes a very good test that is utilized in most cases and only take about 10 minutes for results.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
Inappropriate urination and defecation often accompany an underlying medical condition and do not occur “to get back at the owner.” A cat that is urinating inappropriately may have any number of conditions associated with the behavior, including lower urinary tract disease, kidney disease, urinary tract infection and diabetes mellitus. It can also be a sign of arthritis, which makes it difficult for the cat to get into the litter box. Blockage of the urinary tract signals a veterinary emergency. A blockage is treatable, but timing is critical. Once identified, the cat must receive veterinary care as soon as possible. Otherwise, fatal complications could develop. Signs include straining in the litter box with little or no results, crying when urinating and frequent attempts to urinate.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Diabetes Treatment
Any pet can be at risk for having pancreatitis but Miniature schnauzers, Miniature poodles, Cocker spaniels and Siamese cats seem to have a higher incidence of disease. It is also most common in middle aged pets, with 7 year old pets being the mean average in both cats and dogs. Female dogs also have a slight edge over males in being more common to have pancreatitis. There are also some factors that can increase the possiblities of a pancreatitis incident such as: obesity, diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease), chronic kidney failure and several types of cancer.
Thyroid Disease Treatment
There are several different ways that SIBO can occur and by itself or secondary to a current (usually unknown) problem. Common problems that SIBO can become secondary to are cancer, a foreign body (such as a pet ate a toy), adhesions, hypothyroidism, exocrine pancreatic insufficieny, as well as, many other immuneodeficienies. Ask your veterinarian if your dog has a predispostion to SIBO. SIBO can become a problem by itself when a pets diet is changed rapidly or more commonly a pet ingests something it shouldn’t have such a things from the trash (some veterinarians like to call this “trash can toxicosis”) or the dead bird in the backyard that you didn’t know about.
Knee Problems Treatment
Early on in the process many pets can be medically managed with anti-inflamatories and supportive product for joint health (ask what you veterinarian recommends), but surgery should be preformed if your dog has persistent pain or lameness or if other knee injuries occur due to the luxating patella. There are several different surgical techniques for correction of this condition and will be decided upon by the veterinarian doing the procedure. If the surgery is preformed before arthritis occurs, the prognosis is excellent and the pet should regain full use of their leg. However, if athritis has occured then often intermittent pain will arrise and anti-inflammatories will be needed to ensure your pet remains pain free.
Heart Disease Treatment
Yes, many of these illnesses could be due to the health (or disease) in the patient’s mouth. Bacteria enters the blood stream at the level of the gingivitis and periodontal disease and then moves through the blood stream to the liver, kidneys, heart valves, etc. causing bacterial infection that could lead to long term health problems for your pet. If your pet has another illness such as diabetes or heart failure other precautions will be made to make sure they are as safe as possible during the procedure.
Kidney Disease Treatment
Clinical sign vary greatly from case to case and can make Lepto very challenging to diagnosis. Exam findings tend to be things like: rapid breathing rate, rapid pulse, poop perfusion, dark stool, bloody noses, strange bruising, stiff gait, conjunctivitis, blood in urine and mildly swollen lymph nodes. Patients generally only have one to three of these findings which are very general in nature. Historically, patients with low grade/early disease, can have a fever, sore muscles, stiffness, weakness, anorexia, depression, vomiting, dehydration, diarrhea, cough, breathing difficulty, increase drinking or urinating, vaginal discharge, and at times sudden death. If the patient does not present with these signs, there could be a return to normalcy for a time. With Chronic disease, there may be no evidence of infection at all, increased urination or drinking, fever of an unknown origin, signs of chronic kidney failure/dysfunction or evidence of kidney or liver inflammation.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Pet’s teeth need care very similar to your own. We brush our teeth daily to ensure they stay clean and to prevent tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats! About 85% of dogs and cats have some form of periodontal disease and are vulnerable to the pain, bad breath and tooth loss that could follow. Your pet can develop these problems if the teeth are left untreated. In fact, keeping your pet’s mouth healthy is not just important for the health of the teeth and gums, it is important for systemic (whole body) health as well. One gram of tartar contains over 3 billion bacteria. This bacteria enters the blood stream through capillaries in the inflamed gums and showers the heart, lungs, kidneys, and other organs. Tooth and gum disease can lead to other health concerns including liver, heart and kidney failure.

Seizure Treatment
“Girl” was in the top 100 of the UKC Wold Hunt and is two wins away from being a GRNITECH in UKC. She has qualified for the State Hunt in PKC. This is all thanks to Dr. Wilson who has saved her after a Wild Hog attack, Tick Fever and a subsequent seizure disorder.
Poisoning Treatment

Dental Surgery
At Carter County Animal Hospital, we offer advanced surgery techniques and technology in our practice. Surgeries performed include mass removals, wound repairs, abdominal exploratory surgery, bladder surgery, oral surgery, spay/neuters, hernia repairs, dewclaw removals just to name a few. Like you, our greatest concern is the well being of your pet so prior to putting him/her under anesthesia, we will perform a complete physical examination. In addition, we feel that every pet undergoing surgery should also have pre-anesthetic blood work, IV catheter, and pain management. These procedures help reduce the risk of anesthesia and make your pet more comfortable.
Veterinary Surgery
Christmas catastrophes such as ingestion of decorations can also turn into a rendezvous at veterinary clinic and an emergency surgery. So if your pets are showing too much interest in certain decorations make sure you move the decoration so it is unavailable to be chewed/swallowed/ or otherwise destroyed.
Laser Surgery
Laser Surgery: CCAH utilizes a CO2 laser for most of our surgical procedures which diminishes the pain, inflammation and blood loss during our surgical procedures. This is not mandatory for our elective spays and neuters but is highly recommended. Should you have any questions please ask a staff member or Dr. Wilson so they can be answered properly.
Declawing
Spaying and Neutering
Sadly, each year more than 15 million dogs and cats are killed in the United States because of overpopulation. Spay/Neuter surgeries help prevent the unwanted birth of animals that would be difficult to place into good homes. Spaying and neutering of pets also offers health benefits. It lowers the incidence of sex-hormone related behaviors or diseases. The neutered male cat has a decreased urine odor, less of a tendency to fight & roam, and it is far less inclined to mark its territory by spraying urine. The neutered male dog is also less likely to roam, mark territory, and display aggression towards other dogs. Neutering can decrease the unwanted mounting behaviors, lower the chance of tumors around the anus and penis, and also lower the risk of prostate enlargement (which occurs in at least 60% of unneutered male dogs 5 years or older.) Spayed female cats and dogs do not have reproductive tract disease problems, they have less urinary tract infections, and they have significantly fewer cases of mammary cancer. We generally recommend that all felines and canines be spayed or neutered before 6 months of age. This ensures that females are spayed before their 1st heat cycle thus decreasing the chance of mammary cancer. Neutering before 6 months ensures that the surgery is performed prior to puberty when all of the behaviors associated with testosterone may begin. Carter County Animal Hospital has an in-house laboratory, X-ray facility and pharmacy that allow a large number of general illnesses to be diagnosed quickly and medications to be dispensed immediately for your convenience. Should your pet need surgical or dental procedures, our surgical area is equipped with a CO2 surgical laser to minimize your pet’s discomfort and a dental scaler and polisher that assist in keeping your pet’s teeth healthy and contribute to their overall health.
X-Ray
Microchipping
When properly implanted, a small layer of connective tissue forms around the microchip, preventing movement or migration of the chip. Instructions and injection sites will vary depending upon the specie. As with any brand of chip, HomeAgain® microchips will not migrate if instructions are followed and implantation is correct.
