Best vet experience in 15 years!

I brought my cat in for an emergency and the staff was really compassionate. The doctor was amazing, she listened to all my concerns and answered all my questions. My cat ended up having emergency surgery (which they can do right there) and she is now 100% better. There is a great atmosphere there, I recommend All Creatures to everyone.

Preventive Care

Dental Care
The most effective home care for cats is to brush their teeth every day. If your cat does not tolerate this, we recommend feeding Hill’s T/D diet as 1/3-1/2 of their regular diet. This kibble holds together while they bite into it, which mechanically removes tartar. It also contains enzymes that help to break down tartar. We have found that this diet greatly improves cats’ oral health
Vaccination
Rabies vaccination is required by law. This is because rabies can be contracted by wildlife, pets and humans! Proof of vaccination is required to license your dog (which should be done at 6 months of age) and to groom, board or ship your dog. The first rabies vaccine lasts for one year, but thereafter the rabies vaccines last for three years.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Lyssa Alexander is an Ann Arbor native and a graduate from Michigan State University. Her main interests are internal medicine, ophthalmology and exotic animal medicine. She lives in Ann Arbor with her husband Julius, her daughters Snow and Luna, and their dog, cat, turtle, skink, two guinea pigs, and goldfish. Behavioral Counseling
First, remember that many of the items on your socializing to-do list are just as easy to do as before. Introducing your dog to nail trims, mock-exams, floor textures, loud noises (especially thunderstorm and firework sounds), vacuums and more is still necessary and available. You can take it a step further, and play dress-up. Put on hats, sunglasses and flashy/strange clothes. Practice going through basic obedience training with your puppy while wearing these funny get-ups. This will teach your pup to expect the unexpected when it comes to how people look.
Nutritional Counseling
Infection can occur through the ingestion of feces, dead animals and exposure to contaminated environments. Many of these parasites are zoonotic, which means they can be transmitted from your pet to humans! Symptoms in cats can include diarrhea, weight loss and the visible presence of adult worms in the feces.
Comprehensive Examination
We treat your pets like family. They will receive gentle and attentive care the whole time they are with us. When your cat checks in for surgery, they will receive a full physical examination and be given a sedative. They will receive an IV catheter in their front leg as a safe-guard during anesthesia. A dedicated technician will stay with them 100% of the time while they are under anesthesia and attend to them closely during their recovery period. We use high quality pain medications, anesthetics and suture material. Your cat will go home the same afternoon and will need to return for a no-charge recheck 10-14 days later to examine their incision.

Parasites Treatment and Control
It is possible to test cats for heartworms, but we do not perform testing as routinely in cats. Testing is much less reliable than it is for dogs. Also, there is NO EFFECTIVE TREATMENT for heartworm infections in cats. Consistently giving heartworm prevention is the best way to protect your cat from heartworm disease.
Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Distemper (FVRCP) vaccination is a combination vaccine that covers several diseases. This vaccine protects against herpesvirus, calicivirus and paneleukopenia virus (feline distemper). Herpesvirus and calicivirus can cause serious respiratory infections and panleukopenia can cause devastating immune deficiency. We recommend the “distemper” vaccine for all cats, whether or not they are strictly indoors. Viruses are spread by direct contact between cats, but they can also be brought into your home on your shoes and clothing.

Managing arthritis in dogs is extremely important for overall quality of life. There are several ways to approach arthritis prevention and management, including diet, supplements, pain medication, therapy laser, exercises and many more.

Food allergy can look very similar to environmental allergies. The best way to diagnose food allergies is to do a strict trial with a home-cooked novel ingredient diet or a prescription hypoallergenic diet. In order to confirm a food allergy diagnosis, a food challenge should be performed at the end of your trial.

Bordatella is better known as Kennel Cough. Kennel Cough is a respiratory disease that is spread through the air and direct contact with infected dogs. Kennel Cough is similar to the human cold, and the vaccine is required by high quality kennels, groomers, puppy classes and doggy day cares. The decision to vaccinate against Bordatella is based on the lifestyle of the pet.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Distemper is a combination vaccine that covers several diseases. Most include Distemper, Hepatitis, ParaInfluenza and Parvo viruses (DHPP). There are four strains of Leptospirosis that can also be included (DHLPP). The Leptospirosis vaccination can also be given by itself. These diseases are transmitted various ways including through direct contact, the air, feces, bodily fluids, and stagnant water. Any pet that is ever out of the home or around other animals is at risk, so the Distemper vaccine is highly recommended for all dogs.
Parvovirus Infection Treatment
All puppies should go to a puppy class to encourage proper socialization with dogs and people. However, when taking young puppies out of the house, remember that they are susceptible to serious diseases (parvovirus) until fully vaccinated. Avoid taking puppies to unfamiliar yards, dog-parks or high dog traffic areas.
Ear Infection Treatment
Itching, licking, hair loss, skin infections and ear infections are all incredibly common in dogs. Allergies and parasite infestations are the main causes of skin and ear issues in dogs. Allergies and parasites cause inflammation and irritation to the skin and ears. Once the skin becomes irritated, the natural yeast and bacteria that live on the surface of your dog's skin and ears over-grow and add to your dog's discomfort. It is important to diagnose and treat ear infections and skin infections when they occur, but it is also crucial to address the underlying cause.
Urinary Tract Infection Treatment
Look for clues that your dog has to use the bathroom (whining, going to door, sniffing around). Placing a bell on your puppy's collar or by the back door can help you pick up on these cues easier. If a puppy backslides in their training or seems to pee frequently- have them checked out (urinary tract infections are not uncommon in puppies). Housebreaking is extremely intensive in the beginning, but it is worth the effort. Have patience; most dogs are fully housebroken by 4-6 months of age.

Hip Dysplasia Treatment
Arthritis is one of the most wide-spread conditions we see in elderly pets. This condition commonly effects dogs, cats and rabbits. Arthritis can come from issues with a pets' joints that they were born with (elbow or hip dysplasia), from injuries, or just from normal wear and tear on their joints over time. The vast majority of cats over the age of 10 years old have significant arthritis in multiple joints. Arthritis is painful and debilitating in all species and there is a lot we can do about it. We have excellent joint supplements and diets that can help slow down joint decay and reduce inflammation and we have excellent pain medications. We also have a wide variety of alternative therapies (acupuncture, chiropractic care, rehabilitation medicine, therapy laser). Things you can do at home to help prevent and treat arthritis are to keep up consistent moderate exercise, provide soft bedding and keep your pet at a lean body weight.

Recently, the FDA has come out with some initial information about a possible link between a kind of heart disease in dogs (dilated cardiomyopathy) and certain diets.

There is also a whole world of veterinary prescription diets that provide a number of health benefits for our pets. Prescription diets are life-changing for pets with conditions like kidney disease, food allergies and arthritis. However, many of these diets are also incredibly good at treating common and preventable conditions as well now.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Dental disease is one of the most common medical problems that we see in our adult cats. Cats can accumulate large amounts of tartar and suffer from extensive periodontal disease, gingivitis and tooth resorption. These conditions can be very painful and can negatively effect your cats' health and well-being. Most adult cats will require anesthetized dental cleanings every 6 months to 3 years. Proper home-care can greatly extend the amount of time between dental cleanings and reduce oral pain.

At All Creatures Animal Clinic, we do not recommend declawing your cat as a routine procedure. De-clawing is a surgical procedure to remove the last digit of a cat’s fingers with the attached claw to prevent scratching. Most cats can be trained to scratch appropriate objects instead of furniture by providing good scratching posts and scratching boxes or covering and blocking tempting furniture for a period of time.
Spaying and Neutering
WHEN TO GET YOUR DOG NEUTERED - We recommend neutering at 4-6 months of age. Spaying a female before their first heat (usually 6-7 months) helps to reduce their chances of breast cancer. We will sometimes delay the time of spaying or neutering based on your dog's breed or health conditions.

Annual dental x-ray. Dental disease is very common in rabbits and we don’t usually catch it until it is quite advanced. By taking a single, quick picture once per year, we can pick up on disease at much earlier stages and make a big difference with small corrections.
