We look to collaborate with you, the client directly and understand your needs and goals. You are number one in our eyes. We will work with your general/pediatric dentist, orthodontist, oral surgeon, general/family providers, Ear Nose and Throat physician (ENT), psychologist and other health providers. We will work on making suggestions of consultation of one of the above if this may be helpful, with respect and contacting of your referring provider. This may include sleep medicine, a myofunctional therapist, stress management and other professionals.

MRI
My doctor sent me for an MRI and referred me to Jeff at Alaska Physical Therapy Specialists, LLC. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Turns out I had bulging discs. And littleabdominal strength from being out of shape was making a bad situation worse. Jeff drew diagrams and explained how the spine and muscle groups work together, and what exactly was causing my issues. I’m big on understanding why and how, and he was very patient with my many questions. He worked with me to create customizedexercises to strengthen my abs and back muscles to keep things in place and aligned. We worked on them during PT sessions, and I would continue with them at home. If something didn’t work, he would come up with a new approach next session. I was given as much office time as needed, but no unnecessary visits. Most importantly I wasgiven real life exercises I could keep up on my own at home to keep my body healthy.

ACL injuries and tears are unfortunately a fairly common injury to athletes and the general public ages often ranging from approximately 13-50 years old. Non-contact ACL sprains or tears may occur due to stress to the knee produced by decreased body mechanics and awareness that contribute to excessive lateral to medial, rotation or hyperextension forces to the knee and lower leg. These could be sustained in accidents while skiing, playing volleyball, basketball, gymnastics and running. ACL sprains and injuries sustained from contact sports occur due to impacts to the lower leg sustained during sports such as soccer, football, hockey and other competitive and recreational sports. At Alaska Physical Therapy Specialists, LLC, your first visit will include a full assessment of your body mechanics and awareness, an evaluation of the alignment of the knee during functional movements including, squatting, single leg balance and proprioception activities, jumping and landing mechanics as well as an overall trunk and lower quarter strength examination. We will develop a home and/or gym exercise program specifically for you based on our evaluation to improve your lower quarter and trunk mechanics, strength, endurance, balance and overall stability to reduce the incidence or even re-occurrence of an ACL injury.

We rely on the body’s inherent recuperative functions through exercise and manual therapy treatment, and we use these treatments to develop a unique plan for each patient.

Ankle Sprain
Prior to a scheduled surgery your physician may recommend physical therapy if you have excessive swelling, limited range of motion or strength and difficulty with your overall functional mobility, in order to prepare your body for the upcoming surgery. This is common after knee or ankle injuries, such as an ACL tear or prior to a planned total knee replacement surgery. Education can be provided on proper use of assistive devices such as crutches and walkers, how to safe use these at home and in the community in addition to how to tackle the household stairs. Occasionally, this is only 1-2 visits for education and an individual outline of exercises that you will continue on your own until your surgery day. Orthopedic manual physical therapy techniques will be utilized to help you gain range of motion and joint mobility as well as specific clinical exercises will be performed in order to help you achieve your pre surgery goals.
